Sheard Eyes Owls Takeover

Wednesday could well be on the verge of a takeover with media reports today reporting Lancashire-based businessman Geoff Sheard is the front-man behind a multi-million pound bid for the club.

The Owls have long been discussing the need for a takeover, but Wednesdayites have been dealt numerous false dawns in recent years for a number of reasons.

But now there could well be light at the end of the tunnel, with Sheard in discussions with the club about a takeover, with a deal said to be done in the next few days.

Sheard is thought to be the front man of a group looking to clear the Owls' debts and help them climb back up to the Premiership in the coming years, and has already held dicsussions with fans' group Wednesdayite over purchasing their shares at Hillsborough.

Sheard has worked in the kit manufacturing business and on the commercial sides at both Preston and Stoke City and has gathered a number of backers to help finance the deal.

And Wednesday fans are sure to learn more over the move in the coming days and weeks, so keep checking Vital Sheffield Wednesday for all the latest updates.

Sounds the most likely to be true of all the rumours, especially if he's got wednesdayite on side as well as the club.

This is starting to look quite serious. It's difficult not to get very excited. Rumour I heard was that Laws probably wouldn't stay. I'd be gutted to see him leave but if they want to bring in big names, they'll want a big name as manager. Just hope it's not Steve McLaren.

dont get carried away with it all lads, laws will stay because there is not enough money to splash. you would be lucky for any player investments let along a big name manager to pay and please which would not come without cash to splash anyway. you do need a take over at some point to move forward otherwise it could get worrying for you. the crowds and dropping fast now too. being honnest though i think it will all work out for you - the old saying 'lucky lucky wednesday!!

Wednesdayite didn't name him, it was in The People yesterday. Then Radio Sheffield named him, then Wednesdayite responded today. I'm in Wednesdayite and I'll be voting to sell the shares for any amount of money. If they're putting 50mill in, they can have our shares for a tenner.

this in fighting has gone on for long enough, the club is in a terrible financial state and we needhelp big time, how long can laws keep on gambling on turning nobodies into something, if this deal is scuppered because of DA and wednedayites long running saga then we are doomed forever, this could be our last chance of salvation, think long and hard you people who are involved and get your selfish heads from up your backsides. we need to move on!!

There was mention in the People article about money from Italy, Asia and Russia (worrying !!!) ...and the fact that Sheard does not have enough money himself. Anyone know what the deal is ? We all want 'salvation' but I also wanna know what we are getting ourselves into before I start checking hotels for the forthcoming 'European Tour'.

salvation may be a bit strong but what are the alternatives, strikes me there aren't that many fairy godmothers about, we are a club with one hand tied behind it's back, on a positve note maybe we could just go into administration and end up with nowt!!

Just for someone to come in and wipe our debt off would be good enough for me, it would mean we could compete financially on a level playing field with the rest of the championship, but if someone wants to put further money into the club like it seems with Sheard, then Jurassic Park!! :)

I'm not overly bothered where the money comes from, but I don't want a Milan Mandaric at the helm who thinks if he changes the manager enough, he's going to do another Portsmouth. Sounds like Sheard knows a bit about the game, so he should be able to spend the money in the right way.

seems we're getting to nitty gritty part of negotiations, if this consortium have gone this far they will know enough about the goings on at hillsborough, this is serious money we're talking about and what they wany in return will be high on the agenda, I don't think we have anything to lose, they surely have to have a successful club if they are to get anything back. so it's a win win situation

I agree there aren't many fairy godmothers out there - so why would anyone think that this lot are the FGM crew ?...Anyone putting 50M into a club (unless your name is Abramovich) is looking for a return on their investment - so how do this lot see themselves getting a return, over what timescale do they expect to recoup, are they looking for operational profit or future re-sell and ... if (I hope not) their plan does not work - then what will their investment recovery approach be, how easily can they afford to be 50M out of pocket and for how long....

alright db2002 i understand your suspicion but what i mean is that if they are gonna invest the only way any money is going to be recouped is through this club OUR CLUB being successful, how can they get monies back any other way, we are in debt, you cannot get anything out of nothing without a great deal of hard work and commitment, we are looking down the barrel of a gun, do you see a long term future with the way things are at present?

dbblue ...I'm not suspicious - I don't have anything to be suspicious about - and that is my point ...before we all go out and celebrate our (Lancastrian, Bahamas, Asian, Italian, Russian, Timbuktu) saviour arriving across the Pennines....what do we know about them and how they intend to run the club. Selling SWFC is NOT what this is about - it is about selling to the right buyer. And while I cannot disagree with your comment that they would only benefit from 'their purchase' (because that is how they will see it) being successful - what does that have to do with it ??? It's not about WANTING to be successful, it's about whether they can be successful ..and if they are not sucessful (ie profitable at a rate of return to their own pockets that covers their 50M outlay !!!) then what will they do and when ?

It has to be a step in the right direction. Can't see it being a Hicks / Gillett situation. All other recent foreign takeovers have been beneficial for the clubs involved in general. This can only be good for SWFC, at least if it means Allen selling his shares and wiping out the 26M debt. The board / directors sound clued up to me. My only concern is that they think big bucks demands a new manager. Brian Laws is the man to take this club back to where it belongs. To do it right will still take time, eg, I wouldn't expect us to get automatic promotion next season. I'd hate to see us doing a Derby(!) Cash for BL to hold on to our current talents and invest in some decent new blood is what this club needs. I for one am very hopeful and very excited about what this could mean for the Wednesday football club. Up the Owls!
