So, Owls Fans, What Do We Know?
'Reports that say that something hasn't happened are always interesting to me, because as we know, there are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns -- the ones we don't know we don't know.' - Donald Rumsfeld
So, with one eye on the Owls current situation, let's examine the former US Secretary of Defence's famous (if slightly baffling) quote and see if all becomes clear for us..
What do we know we know? We know that fans group Wednesdayite have been in talks with a consortium led by businessman Geoff Sheard. We know that because Wednesdayite chairman Darryl Keys has said so, telling the Yorkshire Post, amongst others, that the consortium have been warm, friendly and encouraging, and they may have already made an offer for Wednesdayite's 10% share of the club. We know that once an offer is made, Wednesdayite members will call a meeting and ask members to vote on the deal. We also know that Keys believes if Dave Allen, Keith Addy and Geoff Hulley (the other major shareholders) agree to sell, this would help Wednesdayite members make up their minds to sell.
But wait.. we also know that former Owls chairman Allen says if Wednesdayite sell, he'll sell. He told that to Radio Sheffield. Hmm, a little bit of deja vue there, a little bit of playground teasing: 'You first.'.. ' No, after you, I insist.'.. 'Sorry old chap, but you're going to have to go first.'.. come on guys, it's not helpful. No conditions, please. Just look at your own shareholding and decide what to do with it, for the good of the club.
We know that Wednesday Shareholders Association chairman David Coupe believes this is the real deal and we should be looking forward to better times ahead. 'It's a 'breath of fresh air.. we would recommend anyone who wishes to be part of this new dawn make their shares available'.. excellent news. His interview on Radio Sheffield's Football Heaven is well worth listening to.
We know Wednesdayite have received a flood of new memberships and renewals coming through, it says so on their web site. Of course, members want to have a say in the all important vote once an offer is received for the shares.
We also know the Daily Mail have gone well over the top in their reporting of the situation. You know the article I'm talking about..
What do we know we don't know? We know we don't know what the club thinks.. because at time of writing (very early on Tuesday morning) there's not one word about the current situation on the official web site. Owls Finance Director Bob Grierson and Chief Executive Kaven Walker tell us they can't tell us anything yet. We know we don't know the personal view of Keith Addy and Geoff Hulley. OK, that's fine, we can live with that for now. A statement would be good, but not at the expense of scuppering any negotiation. If no offers have been made, there's nothing to say anyway.
We know we don't know whether rumours of £50 million, Bahamian banks, Asian, Italian or Russian businessmen are true or false. We know we don't know a rumour of £1 million for Wednesdayite's shares is true or false, because at this stage it is just that, a rumour.
Is there anything we don't know we don't know? This is Sheffield Wednesday.. for sure there'll be twists and turns to this saga we haven't even imagined.
What do I know? I know I'm excited. I know life's not dull. Stay tuned, and stay alert. By the time you read this, it could all have changed.
