'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Our Goal Of The Season!

The polls are closed, the votes have been counted and, at last, it's time to announce the result of 'Vital SWFC Goal of the Season'.

More than three quarters of Vital SWFC forum members voted for the same wonder goal, so the result hasn't ever really been in doubt. In truth, only an early season team effort capped by a Francis Jeffers strike vs. Hull attracted a significant proportion of the other votes. So, without further ado (though the picture above SHOULD have given the game away by now?!)...

Nine minutes to go in the match against Plymouth on April 14th, the Owls were one down. An attempted clearance fell to Tommy Spurr who launched a superb 30 yard effort back past a despairing McCormick to send the Hillsborough faithful into raptures, prompting Owls gaffer Brian Laws to comment post-match 'If there was one player who was going to put the ball into the back of the net I would pick Tommy Spurr because he is absolutely Sheffield Wednesday through and through. It could not have happened to a nicer guy.. Moments like that in games can change a season.'.

A sparkling highlight of an excellent season for our boy Tommy. Congratulations to him!

I would have said any goal that won or drew us a game toward the end of the season when we REALLY needed it, could have been goal of the season, even if it were a tap in on the goal line!!!! Up the mighty Owls!!

Westy, we had the same thing at the Lane, a couple of years ago. David Unsworth scored the ugliest goal of his career against Hull which won us the game and was a big factor in our promotion, so i can see where you're coming from there, it just so happens that Spurr's was a bloody good goal, i had to applaude that...(reckon he meant it? haha)
shepsblade
cracking goal from spurr and well deserved from a quality player, shame the keeper got a tough or it would have looked even better. just imagin if ronaldo, or rooney had scored that, we would be seeing replays of it every day.
bladesforlife1889
he should have saved that one against spurr/ it came off his shin and the goalie should have caught it easily.
mattyg
Nah shepsblade he NEVER meant to hit it that sweetly! Haha! Even Laws said 99 times out of 100 he would have been ducking on the touchline! Great goal though and at such a critical time for us. Even I have to say 'well done Tommy' on that one!
