Owls - Why You Should Renew!

With the deadline for discounted season ticket renewals approaching, Vital Sheffield Wednesday forum member s11owl tells us why he's renewing next season - and why he thinks you should, too...

First and foremost; I love Sheffield Wednesday... and I think you all do too... or we wouldn't all spend our time reading every single article on this website, clinging on to the scraps of good news that are tossed our way by random people, usually instead depressing ourselves daily with the tirade of bad news which seems to constantly come from the club.

Football is a magical thing.

It creates a passion inside people, players, and fans alike, which is rarely seen anywhere but in sport. A couple of key examples: the 36,000+ people who turned up to see Wednesday play Norwich on the final day of last season; John Terry, a man in his late 20's crying his eyes out; Roman Abramovich, the man who supposedly doesn't care, not being able to watch the penalties last night. The magic is created by the way so many emotions can flood through you in a relatively short space of time.

Take the United match at their place - I went through about 192 different stages of emotion in under 2 hours...from feeling nervous and apprehensive, to passion and being proud of the boys, to sheer delight and a sense of delirium when Bolder nods home, to panic and anxiety, to pure joy (Bolder mk 2), to anger (at the United fans throwing things from above), to despair, ultimate dejection and humiliation (bloody Beattie), to the final realisation that we'd taken a valuable point, one which helped us ultimately stay in the division.

This is the kind of tension and joy which is never ever created in my life, apart from when i am watching Wednesday.

I'm sure you all feel it too? I don't really understand people who don't like a way I find it hard to relate to their mindset. Football, and Sheffield Wednesday is more than a hobby, for me, and for many others; it's a way of life.

The decision to jack up ticket prices, the decision to sell our best players, the endless promises and glimpses of takeovers which never actually look like they will happen...yeah they annoy me. Yeah I wish they wouldn't (or in some cases would) happen, but they do, and we move on. Despite it all, I'd never swap for anything else. The energy and feeling that I get from Sheffield Wednesday, even though we're watching low standard football, is incomparable to if I'd have been in Moscow last night...Champions League final, or Championship Relegation battle...I didn't want to be a Chelsea or Man United fan last night, and I never will.

To me, you don't really choose who you support, it's sort of in your blood. If you do choose, or swap allegiances I don't really think you're a proper fan. I have more respect for actual Sheffield United and Leeds fans, people who care about their club, than I do for the millions of armchair 'supporters' who choose to like whoever the best team in the country is. I saw a kid wearing a Man United shirt today, in Sheffield, at college...I bet he's never been to Old Trafford.

I'm rambling, but the point I'm trying to make is - you won't want to be sat at home listening to Radio Sheffield next year. However rough things seem to be at the moment, however ripped off you feel, however much you hate certain people at the club - are you going to let this get in the way of your love for your club?

Are you going to let that passion slip and ebb away? Do you want to sacrifice your chance to watch YOUR team week in week out? I know I don't. It'll be worth it. I promise.

Wednesday 'Til I Die.

great read mate but it will take more than that for me . 28 years a season ticket holder and this board are treating us like idiots and its about time we said enough is enough and i will be. they are raping this club of all its assets just for there own gain. prices up no players in only free ones and if we buy any some will have to be sold . once ticket deadline as past beevers or simek will be sold as brunt was last year. Sorry but thats just how i feel at this moment

"However ripped off you feel, however much you hate certain people at the club - are you going to let this get in the way of your love for your club?" YES - and only a mug would continue to patronize these clowns with their hard earned cash. I didn't renew last season when they suddenly announced it was an ID card too and I will never renew again. Being able to pick what matches you go to is ultimately cheaper and far more convenient. Why would you pay 25 to go and watch Wednesday vs Swansea in the freezing cold if its on TV anyway? When I was a teenager I thought it was all a matter of life and death too but as you get more mature you realize that it's just a game and there's more to life than an overhyped, overpriced, over-saturated sport like this.

Great read mate. I agree, shouldn't let the politics of the club get in the way of us supporting the club we love. I understand where some peopleare coming from when they don't want to renew but I will be.

now now, we're all entitled to an opinion chaps. I for one would renew a season ticket if I had one to renew, but working most weekends in Leeds of all places put an end to that..... I will follow the club through thick and well thicker and sure I feel like saying **** off every other weekend but still you can't take that passion out of your heart...... WEDNESDAY TIL I DIE!!!!!

If you're 42 and you still don't know that football is a game then there's little hope for you. Do you still believe in Santa Claus? It's not life or death - deal with it.

"Why would you pay 25 to go and watch Wednesday vs Swansea in the freezing cold if its on TV anyway?" Because it's good to have that option? Because you know, deep down, that watching it on TV can never be as good? Because, as a fan, you want to support the team the best way you can instead of lining the pockets of some media executive? We've all got our opinions, and maybe instead of slagging each other we should be concentrating on thanking s11owl for expressing his feelings so eloquently. Maybe you could write your opposing view, onedeaddj.. contact me via the forum if you want right of reply in an article here. If you're not too busy watching Sky to write it, of course ;)

Some fans are casual and pick the big games to go too. Some fans are die hard and go to every game........Alot depends on your situation, I suppose, For example Kids/Job/Cash etc........But one thing is guaranteed..........all the casual fans will come from the woodwork if we begin well next year. I KNOW LOADS OF OWLS aged between 40's to 60's who said they would never get a season ticket or spend another penny on the club, Until Allen left....So I wish now, they'd prove it.

personaly l agree with what most of you are saying but l will not be re-newing this season, last season l like most got took in with all the hype & spin, pre-season ticket sales talk, we were pushing for promotion who we were getting etc,etc , & what happened 5/6 games into the season we were watching a team that could not play at championship level we were poor very poor & l like probably most felt as though l had been tricked, but putting all that aside the main reason l will not be re-newing is because of the scandalous price for a S/T for my 11 year old lad, no-one on this planet can justify to me why his S/T should be the same price as a under 18 year old 201 on the north stand, someone somewhere is taking the pi$$, but they are not doing it at my expense thank you very much, l have to pay for my lads S/T someone who is under 18 is probably earning their own money, someone at hillsborough has got it very WRONG !!

the club proved they can fill the stadium if tickets are priced competetively when will common sence prevail and these narrow minded idiots realise this and get there heads out of the sand we all want a sucessfull team but there has to be a bit of give and take if we do well next season all this hype will be forgotton get behind the team come on wednesday lets join hull in the top flight .the only difference between hull and wednesday is hull have no debt while we have a mill stone round our necks it will always be a struggle but why should us true fans stump up more cash on the back of false promises.

hate to say it but we need a big money takeover if we want out of the championship, even if we do scrape into the Prem with a hard fought season we'll still cash to stay in the top flight. There's no point in arguing amonst ourselves, thats only gonna split the club, we're all better than that
