Owls Players To Pay For Palace Trip

Wednesday fans will be paying their way down to see their team play at Crystal Palace on Saturday, but the players will also be paying out of their own pocket to travel to Selhurst Park

It's the kind of story that you'd see from a struggling League Two club, maybe even a 'small' League One club, but paper reports today are saying Wednesday players will have to fork out 30 from their own pocket for train travel to Saturday's Championship clash at Crystal Palace.

Reports in a number of daily newspapers have today revealed that Wednesday were set to travel to Selhurst Park by coach, but players weren't keen on a long journey on the motorway - and a repeat of the scenario which saw them hammered at Reading earlier in the season.

And Wednesday have confirmed that the squad will be travelling to London by train, but that it was the players' decision to do so, hitting back at reports that the club didn't want to pay for travel to an away game.

Owls boss Brian Laws told the official SWFC site: "I would stress that it was initiative that came from the players and not the club insisting that they had to pay for travel to an away game."

Wednesday will be desperate to return to winning ways against Neil Warnock's Eagles after suffering three defeats on the spin, but this latest matter at S6 could well contribute to the Owls continuing to fall down the Championship ladder.

Only at Wednesday...

It's not been denied, it's simply a "good initiative". There is no way the club can put any kind of weird positive spin on this. Shocking. Brian, you should be ashamed.

Who cares? I'd personally rather go by train. The players can afford to cough up, the club obviously can't. If it helps us get a result on the road, then good on the lads.

Sorry, S6, but that's crap. They should be down there the night before funded by the club and ready for the task at hand the next day.

This really puts into perspective just how desperate the situation is. Now Forest are reported ot be sniffing round our manager. I really fear the worst!

It's just another day in the life of Wednesday. What's next, Laws quits Owls to take Forest job?
will it ever happen
One thing's for sure...it really underlines how bad our financial situation is!
US Owl
it's hardly Laws' fault - he's just trying to put a positive spin on it. I assume it wasn't his idea that the players pay their own way. it may improve our away form though with the players paying for their own travel!!
south_owl
Don't beleive a word of it anyway!!
will it ever happen
i agree with auckland we should be in a hotel the night before to prepare properley the situation we are in is soon put right with a couple of wins so we all be positive again come on wednesday if forest can beat palace so can we.
beverley owl

bladesforlife1889

SuperOwls
hahaha pigforlife, what a sad, grade A c**k!

Enjoy the train ride. Choo Choo. We will make sure to give them a wave as they are in line to pay for their tickets. What a poorly run football club. ONLY ONE KEVIN MCCABE!!
sharpblades
auckland, its hardly Brians fault the clubs skint and the players want to go by train is it??????????
gudetehowl
To be fair the whole thing is embarassing. bfl and sharpb wouldn't be doing their job as United fans if they weren't taking the p155 about this. I would be if it was them. I read this article in a national newspaper and so the wrong message is being sent out nationally. I had high hopes for this season but unless something happens soon I think we will lose a couple of players in January. If we lose any defenders we are in big trouble.

If Laws quits do you still think Alan Shearer is still in the frame? (or did I mishear -was it Alan Turner). Who would want the job? Russell Brand is looking for work. Maybe we could get him to phone the other team the night before and leave messages about their relatives to put them off. We need all the help we can get at the minute.

Lets look at this. Forest arent playing well. Lawsy's (ex forest favourite) contract is running out....... I could have wrote that!!!! typical column filler me thinks. Plus lets look at the positive of our players wanting to improve there away performance by taking the initiative to get themselves down there without the stress of the M1 there was days when footballers used to catch the bus to training. Hard work attitude followed fought out draw against Mrs Doubtfires Palace
