Laws Hints At McMahon Return

Wednesday boss Brian Laws used the post-Palace match interview on BBC Radio Sheffield to reveal he's hoping Middlesbrough right-back Tony McMahon will return to Hillsborough on loan.

The 'Boro youngster was recalled to the Riverside Stadium by boss Gareth Southgate after he was sent off, and slapped with a three-match ban, in the Owls' defeat at Barnsley last month.

As Southgate recalled McMahon, it meant Wednesday didn't lose any days from the defender's loan spell, and that he could return to complete his loan with the Owls once the three-match ban was out of the way.

Laws revealed that he could well be returning to Middlewood Road on Tuesday to train with Wednesday and expect to go straight back in to the squad for the visit of Doncaster Rovers at the weekend.

Frank Simek, despite returning as a substitute in the defeat against Plymouth last week, is still a while away from returning to regular first team action, and McMahon is more than capable of acting as cover before his loan stint expires.

The Bishop Auckland born defender played ten games for Wednesday after arriving at the end of August, with the Owls losing just three times when he was a starter in the famous blue and white stripes.

Update: Announced today that Tony McMahon resumes his loan period at Wednesday (28 days which will take him through November), and Stoke City defender Lewis Buxton extends his loan period until mid-January.

He's coming back for 4 more games. Gives us a nice bit of extra defensive cover. Presume that means that Simek's not quite ready for 90 mins yet then. Also see, http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/gossip_and_transfers/7707573.stm, get Whelan back for the rest of the season and send Smith back to Chelsea. He's useless
