Whelan Wants To Play

There's a brief report in today's Daily Mail concerning former Owls midfielder Glenn Whelan, currently on the sidelines at Premiership new boys Stoke City.

We're not sure if it's just one of those newspaper stories you can trot out about any newly promoted club.. after all, when you go up, and make new signings, there'll always be surplus players who don't quite fit the manager's plans.

The report also says Tony Pulis is keeping all his players at the Britannia in case of injuries (which doesn't really add up, since loans can be recalled).

But it's true to say that Whelan has had just three Premiership appearances this season (only one start, on the opening day), plus two games in the Carling Cup. It's also true to say that in recent times, Stoke have bolstered their midfield with the likes of Michael Tonge, Tom Soares, Amdy Faye, Seyi Olofinjana and more - there's lots of competition in Pulis's Potters squad.

So, you'd want to play regularly, wouldn't you, if you were an Irish international with a Premiership club?

Practicalities aside (the size of Whelan's current wage packet being the main stumbling block), we'd swap Jimmy Smith for him, wouldn't we?

i would welcome whelan with open arms. he is a class player but at stoke he is down the pecking order as they have got some quality players. the only thing i would say is that if he did come back he would have to put 110% every game not just for 2 games then he turn up the next game and he cant be bothered. but every game he plays when he puts the famous blue n white shirt on!!!!!! up the owls

Glen Whelan = Quality! We should never have let him go in the first place. For the money we're paying that useless waste of time Lunt and several other part timers eg Jeffers, we could surely have payed him enough to stay!

JOC seems to be doing a reasonable job for you and I was impressed with Watson in the derby. Still think Whelan would be a first choice.

would rather have O'Conner at least he is commited to the owls unlike Whelan who chased the money and now is moaning cos is he isn't good enough to play first team football for Stoke. Don't want him back

It's terrible to think, that Lunt is on such a packet, and Jeffers is indeed like a part timer, but because of two players excessive salaries, you lost such a quality, hard working player in Whelan. The few times I saw him play against us, I rated him very highly, and there was a time when I would have jumped at the chance ti have a player like Whelan at the Lane. Unfortunately, one of the reasons you're where you are is because of bad decisions like that. Lunt's happy enough, sitting on his arse collecting his paypacket & Jeffers, while he will show some quality, is just injured too often. In Whelan, you had an excellent servant and a quality player.

Whelan is a good player but he left. He wanted to leave ages before he did. Who can blame him really. It was obvious he wouldn't play many games in the top flight because he isn't that good. Remember the first season back in the championship - he was rubbish. o' connor looks a very good replacement. Its a massive shame that both Whelan and Brunt left because of what they meant to the fans at the time. Simple fact is until we get investment any player that shows any quality will be gone and we have to start again. Grant will be next.

Have the for sale signs gone back up yet? surely we can find an interested party and put us out of the misery and uncertainty, have to say Lawsy is doing a fantastic job, just hope he's not getting as****ed off as we are
Brighton Owl
The for sale signs are up, but the window shoppers haven't come in the store yet.
