Laws 'Delighted' For Scapegoat Clarke

Wednesday boss Brian Laws has revealed his delight at striker Leon Clarke starting to prove his doubters wrong.

Former Wolves man Clarke has been made the scapegoat for criticism on more than one occassion by some Wednesday fans, but the striker has scored three goals in his last five starts, the winner in the South Yorkshire derby with Doncaster Rovers at the weekend.

'I am delighted for Leon Clarke who has come in for a lot of criticism from the supporters over a season or so,' he said.

'A week is a long time in football. He's got himself a couple of goals his confidence is getting higher and he is justifying he is in the front line.'

He continued: 'Leon's got a lot of tools in the box, sometimes he just doesn't open the box. I think he's even swallowed the key sometimes.

'But the fact is when he does get in the groove there is no doubt he can score a goal.'

Clarke is likely to now be one of the first names down on the teamsheet when Wednesday make the trip to Derby County on Saturday, and he'll be keen to get on the scoresheet again with Akpo Sodje, Deon Burton and Francis Jeffers biting at his heels to get back in to the first team.

Why wasn't Jeffers on the bench?

It really is excellent to see lean Leon banging them in. Long may it continue. However, if he's fit surely Akpo is first choice up front (probably with Tudders). Therefore, it must be time to get shot of Burton. Even if we sell Burton it leaves us five strikers (Akpo, Clarke, Tudgay, Jeffers and Boden) and his wages could go towards getting in some cover in midfield. Mind, it all goes to **** if Grant gets injured
