Derby Keen On Varney Return

Derby County boss Nigel Clough has poured cold water on any potential move from Wednesday for on-loan striker Luke Varney.

The former Crewe man joined Wednesday on loan from the Rams at the eleventh hour last week and featured with a good performance in the blue and white stripes in the stalemate with Swansea City at the weekend.

But even though it's still early days for the striker at Hillsborough, Clough has moved to insist Varney still has a future at Pride Park.

Clough told Clubcall that Varney's deal with the Owls is similar to that of Liam Dickinson at Leeds United, in that he's gone out on loan to get his match fitness up.

He told Clubcall: 'Luke is still a part of our plans here but what he needs now is games to get him back to where he and we want him to be.'

Varney is with Wednesday for the next month after the Owls picked up injuries to Leon Clarke, Akpo Sodje and Michael Gray recently.

Now then, young man! Hulse & Commons up front and your other wingers.. where are you going to fit Varney in?

Varney wants to stay at Derby, they either want to keep him or are trying to hike the prospective price. I still don't understand why we've loaned him, he'll only get splinters in his arse on the bench.

I think we loaned him because we have strikers and wingers who are crocked and there's a good chance we'll need him. I may be wrong. I am a very long way away from S6.

As i said earlier there is no point having players like him here. According to Clough he is here to get his match fitness up. They are below us in the league yet we are paying his wages to get fit. We have to stop loaning so many players. Am I the only one who can see this?
