Southampton Future In Doubt

It could well have been Wednesday many months ago - but the Owls' Championship rivals Southampton today face an uncertain future.

The St Mary's club, currently fighting relegation on the pitch, have had a long-running problem off the pitch financially.

And it came to a head today with the news that the former Premier League club may struggle to operate until the end of the current season.

The Saints' parent company has today gone into administration and Rupert Lowe has resigned from his position as chief executive of the club.

The company, Southampton Leisure Holdings, needs extra money to continue operating, with debts of £27.5 million racked up.

And although the club itself hasn't gone into administration, it's an asset of the parent company which could mean a bleak future - and a points deduction - for the Saints.

The club are currently looking for a buyer, but time is against them, and they could well be in an even stickier predicament when the Saints make the trip to Hillsborough on Saturday, April 18.

Although I've never really liked Southampton, I wouldn't want to see them disappear. It's people like Abramovich and the Man City owners who should step in and help out the lower leagues instead of pumping money into Premier League clubs and widening the financial gulf. The Saints could be the first of a few clubs heading the same way I reckon.

BFL you are still out there. I was beginning to think you had disappeared up your own ar53. Southampton have been punching above their weight for years - so have Charlton. They wont disappear they will just be in the doldrums for the next 10 years. So what been there done that - Twice

I've got a certain sympathy for Saints, being brought up a fan before I saw the light, but still hold affection for the club. Yes they were probably "punching abover their weight" for years in the Prem but I always thought it was a positive thing that a small club could still hold a place in the Prem year on year, it shouldn't always be about the big guns should it? I, for one, hope they come through this

you lot have some-how dodged administration - just don't know how. Any other club with your magnatude of debt would got points deducted and gone into admin. obviouslly all the bankers are wendy fans. i'm sure you all amazed that you havn't gone into admin. lucky lucky wendy as always!! southampton have the same amount of debt as you and the are well and truely in the crap they dont have a bunch of co-op bank big wigs to pull the strings for them like you lot seem to have.

whats luck got to do with going into / or not going into admin pfl?! We've not gone into admin because we have a decent turnover, and have the potential to make money and clear our debts. So why would the co-op bank force us to go into admin and seriously reduce the amount we would pay back to them?? whats that got to do with luck? its just business sense you clown

PFL -It's Simple - like you... Because Wednesday have an Asset base ( an even more importantly a potential asset base) that far far exceeds there level of debt. Hence administration is not likely, nor would it be a logical solution.

Yeah we're REAL lucky... Not too long ago, a flooded stadium, a persistant injury jinxed squad, etc etc etc. Yet we still ***** on the blades and that's with no money in the coffers too.

Still havent answered my question pfl. Southampton havent got a better stadium than us (it holds less so not as much potential to fill it), the league table suggests that they dont have a better squad than us at all, higher crowds? i think Southampton are getting about 15,000 at the moment. Convenient? Whats so convenient about it?? It's just business sense, why would co-op bank force us into administration and severly cut the amount they would get back?? Anyone with half a brain can understand that pfl you clown
