Varney's Future in Doubt

Varney's Future in Doubt

On-loan striker Luke Varney has already made a good impression on the Wednesday faithful since his move from Derby County - but where will his future lie?

The former Charlton man arrived at Wednesday on loan until the end of the season after picking up a series of injuries following his move to Derby.

Rams boss Nigel Clough has revealed since the move that the attacker is set to return to Pride Park following his loan spell, something which Varney has repeated.

But media reports are today suggesting that Clough is looking to totally revamp his Derby squad for next season after a disappointing campaign for the Rams.

Clough is thought to be willing to let 12 players leave the club in the sumnmer.

But whether or not Varney is part of that 12 is unclear, although the striker arrived at Pride Park before Clough's arrival as manager.

The Rams boss will no doubt be keeping a close eye on the form of the striker, who's unavailable for selection against Derby this weekend as part of his loan agreement.

And with Varney only putting pen-to-paper on a deal at Derby in January, Wednesday could well have to fork out a big sum for the player - a sum Brian Laws may not have to play with.
