Remember The 96
3:06 pm, April 15th 1989. The FA Cup semi final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest, staged at Hillsborough, was called to a halt as a tragedy unfolded at the Leppings Lane end.
96 Liverpool fans died on a day that football changed forever, and loved ones of those who fell had to try and find the strength to rebuild a shattered existence. The struggle for some kind of closure goes on, but we here at Vital Sheffield Wednesday would simply ask that all football supporters everywhere take a quiet moment from their day to remember those dark times, in memory of the 96.
It doesn't matter what shirt you wear, or what team you support. Twenty years ago, it could so easily have been your family, your community.. it's not just Liverpool, Nottingham or Sheffield. It affects us all and should never be forgotten.
Our thoughts go out to the families, friends and relations of those who lost their lives.
A personal note: following the disaster, the dear departed John Peel started his radio show with Aretha Franklin singing 'You'll Never Walk Alone', and broke down in tears. I'll never forget the disaster, and that moment, as long as I live. If you do spend a moment in contemplation today, I can think of nothing better than to play that song - click here.
