With the season drawing to a close, the Owls can surely secure their Championship status with a victory over lowly Crewe at the weekend. We ask Alex fan Simon Murphy what we can expect...
1. You've picked up form recently - can you stay up?
Definately. I'd have said definately not a few weeks ago but we never give up under Dario and were now just two points behind Millwall, and if we beat you we'll cut the gap to just 5 points which is achievable at the end of the season. If we don't pick up a victory against you though, we're pretty much done for. It's a massive game for us!
2. So are you confident for Saturday?
I'm slightly confident in our own ability of late, and I know Dario will get them up for it big time. I also know that you're firing on all cyclinders at the moment. It sounds like it's your best form of the season and it's come at the right time for you, so I know it's going to be a tough game. There'll be a lot of a personal battles all over the pitch and hopefully our determination can come through and win us the match.
3. Dario Gradi - legend, yes?
Absolutely. The man has done so much for Crewe in all his years here. While you have probably know a dozen or so managers in your lifetime at Wednesday I have ever only known one - weird huh? But we seems to be punching above our weight consistently, and bring through quality players which everyone knows about. Shame we'll always be a selling club - god knows what he could have done with all the talent that's been moved on.
4. I imagine it frustrates you, being a seling club?
Too right. But as I say we are only a small club punching above our weight, and probably will be for the rest of my life. As soon as a decent player comes through a team comes and snatches them off our hands, and then sells them on for double the amount (Dean Ashton!).
5. Who are your danger men?
Kenny Lunt is the guy pulling the strings at the moment. He's been at Alex a while and I'm surprised he's not made the step up. He's not to the standard of the Ashton's and Murphys but he has ability at least for the Championship. Gareth Taylor has showed what we can do in instances, but doesn't seem to have got in his stride yet.
6. You seem to score - and concede - loads at home, looks like it will be an interesting game!
Unfortunately we concede more than we score, but the thrashing over Coventry helped balance it up a bit, and hopefully another thrashing on Saturday against you will level it out! No matter how bad we are it's always entertaining at Gresty Road and the lads always give 100%.
7. If you could take one player from Wednesday to Crewe who would it be and why?
There's a few I wouldn't mind taking off you at the moment! As I said we've got Gareth Taylor on loan from Forest but it hasn't worked out for him. Id take either of your strikers, they seem to be on fire at the moment. Maclean on the bench doesn't seem to be doing much either!
8. Talking of strikers, what's Juan Ugarte doing at the moment?
It's been a very strange one. We signed him on a free in the summer and was looking forward to see him bag goals galore for us. He got loads at Wrexham and people were confident he could make the step up. However, since making his debut against Leicester he's had a nightmare. He's only played three times for us and was loaned back to Wrexham where he got injured! Shame.
9. If you could send one Crewe player to Hillsborough who would it be and why?
That's a harsh one! And one that I won't be answering incase any of the players are reading! The read the Alex message boards you know!
10. Who do you think will go down?
It dreads me to say it but I'll have to go with the current bottom three. I've seen the fixtures, and they look quite good for you. I doubt Derby or Southampton will get dragged into it either. Even if we beat you we have a long way to go. I've seen Millwall and Brighton and nothing has told me they are good enough to stay up.
11. Finally, what do you think the score will be?
I'm confident, so I've gotta go with 3-1 to Alex. It really is a must win for us, more so for us than you I think so we've got to go gung ho for the victory!
Thanks Simon, and good (ish) luck on Saturday and for the rest of the season - so long as your survival isn't at our expense!
