Purse Snapped Up

The first of the quality signings promised by Brian Laws - Darren Purse pens a two year deal following his release by Cardiff.

Laws spoke to the official site: 'My main priority this summer is to sign players with quality and experience. In Darren Purse we have secured the services of someone with both of those qualities in abundance.'

'He has experience of getting promoted from this division and of playing at the very top level but most importantly he is a leader on the pitch. We already have some excellent young players at Sheffield Wednesday and Darren will help bring out the best in the other defenders around him.'

'The improved budget I have been provided this year has enabled me to make some positive movements in the transfer already and I am confident of making one or two more additions in the not too distant future.'

An excellent addition to the squad: proven Championship experience and certain to be a 'voice' on the pitch and off.

good signing
Bad decision brian, not good enough for cardiff, so why should he be playing for us. Sometimes wonder about you brian.

great signin brian just what was needed at the back, play alng side wood, will defo help to get the goal difference from minus to plus, impressed fan
Don't be so pessimistic guys...... I think it's just what we need at the back. We already have a decent amount of quality there and DP is just the sort of player to bring it all together.

alreyt for nowt
A good squad signing. Experience and all that but he wouldn't get in my first team. Defensively we are strong. What we really need to sort out our goal difference is the ability to score some fecking goals. STRIKER please Brian, and please let him be a GOALSCORER capable of 20 goals a season. Get that kind of player and the playoffs will be guaranteed.
Is this the player who was waiting to see if MK Dons got promoted first before he made his mind up.

good signing we have been indifferent in defence away from home this season more competition for places can only be a good thing we now need potter to sign and a striker leroy lita is now a free agent maybe worth a look.

I dunno, ecco, is it? Sure, the guy probably wasn't short of offers but he accepted ours. No sense in sneering at him for something he probably didn't do anyway.

hes very reliable.
id play him before hinds personally. now all we need is leroy lita, lee croft and a mint centre mid and were set for new season!!!!
Sammy Clingan from Norwich you mean SS?
will it ever happen
I'm with you all the way on Lita but I rate Hinds over Purse, he's reliable and strong (particularly as he isn't a natural centre back). Purse does bring experience but has no pace and couldn't get in the Cardiff team despite being club captain. He was, however, the only Cardiff player who seemed to give a stuff in the last game of the season (no denying his commitment or bravery). Maybe he could have a go at teaching JJ about commitment and bravery?
you are all getting so so so carried away. remember you are more than 30m in debt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i have heard today that danny webber is moving to swillsborough in a player + cash deal for spurr. don't rate spurr more than 1.5-2m though absolute tops.
ha ha youre in a playoff next week and you still come on here exaggerate our debt by the usual 10m or so and link us to your tripe while linking yourself to one of our players, sort yoursen out moonpig. Anyway decent signing much needed experience at back best home defense and worst away record says it all
Pigforalaugh tommy is a footballer, not a big boot merchant, so why on earth would he want to go to bumhole lane. besides if you check the records you'll find nobody as moved direct from the pigs to hillsborough for over 50 years.

The poll on this page indicates where fans think the problems and only 6% think centre back an issue. If we have an area at the back where we lack cover it is left back not centre back(only Tommy is recognised in this position). Purse was waiting to see if MK Dons were promoted and do not think any other championship side was in for him. The other signings will have to improve on this otherwise next season will be similar to present. He was a good player 4 years ago but injury and father time have taken toll. He does give his all but you need more than that to get out of this division.
good signing come on brian lets see who else you are bringing in playoffs next season without a doubt
new to this so be gentle... firstly, darren purse is a good signing. i agree that his best days may be behind him but i doubt that brian has signed him to be first choice centre back. we already have three (four including young Tommy) more than able players in this position, but what we don't have is someone these players can learn from, someone who will command respect and someone who's not afriad to be very very nasty! Yes, our defence has been steadied somewhat since the return of hinds, but at times last season some of our younger defenders just weren't nasty enough. This is hopefully something that a player with the experience of Purse can bring to our side, either on the pitch or under t'big tent down on middlewood road! Also, have we not offered a new contract to Michael Gray, surely he's cover at left back? We all know that midfield is the priority but let's be patient, Brian knows who he wants, but no matter how hard he tries we cant finalise anything until the player himself agrees to the deal, the free transfers we're after will surely be talking to other clubs as well? Just because purse is first through the door, it doesn't mean that other areas are bieng neglected UTO
but is clingan's contract up this summer WIEH??? cant see us paying any money for anybody unless its a really small amount!!!
hopefully he will add a bit of the hard man to our team which I think we have been missing, he's definately not scared to throw himself into a tackle, just hope he doesnt get sent off to much next year
Not sure SS? But if it is we should be trying our best to get him. Although Cardiff do seem to be the favourites to get him!
will it ever happen
doubt clingan would be available for nowt, joined them on a free last summer, assumin he signed for at least two maybe three years? now millers in would rather see someone who can play out wide (but not a winger) or in the middle, patches o'hoolahan would be a good bet if we can stretch to a few hundred grand, unlikely i know. Ambrose been mentioned, would not say no
NLTB-yh i would agree ambrose would be a good signing, i was hoping he was the guy we were signing when we got potter last year!!! i thiink his contract may be up too!! i think clingan would b available from the late hundred thousands to early millions!!! doubt we can afford that.
