Potter? Clingan? Miller? Whatever..
OK, no real news emanating from Hillsborough, so what can a newspaper do but speculate?
Brian Laws has been 'stepping up the search' for so long now, he must have reached the top of his ladder - but the Telegraph today puts another name in the frame for the Owls midfield.
We know Brian is still interested in Darren Potter (cue sketchy headlines like 'Laws Hoping Owls Magic Rubs Off On Wolves Midfield Wizard Potter'). He may be on a better deal at Molyneux now they've gone up, but he'll have to balance that with the likelihood of playing in the first team, and it depends on whether he's one of those guys who wants to get games under his belt and whther we can give him the wage he wants.
We're told Brian is interested in Norwich's Northern Ireland international Sammy Clingan (cue sketchy headlines like 'Wednesday Join Trek For Canaries Clingan') but Sammy will command a fee, and that's something which, surely, we won't have, unless we sell first.
Someone who doesn't command a fee is Liam Miller, having been released from QPR, so the price is right. However, the former Celtic youth player has quite a history: he made a bit part appearance at Manchester United after leaving the Bhoys under a cloud of alleged disloyalty. A relatively settled loan period at Leeds (reaching a playoff final) was followed by a Sunderland adventure under the watchful eye of Roy Keane, who dispensed with Miller's services by boiling over after Miller missed training once too often. Not likely to be heading for Ipswich then.
So it seems if there's an out of contract midfielder with any pedigree out there looking for a new deal, we're being linked with him. Stay tuned. Anything could happen in the next half hour. Or not.
