Sodje Grabs Winner At Stocksbridge

A blend of Owls youth and experience overcame Stocksbridge Steels last night, Akpo Sodje grabbing the winner in a 2-1 scoreline.

Steels matches in previous seasons have generally been a runout for the youngsters, but a starting line up comprising O'Donnell, Buxton, Beevers, Nick Wood, Wragg, Johnson, McAllister, Boden (c), Esajas, Sodje and Modest meant more useful pre-season action for a good number of Wednesday first teamers.

The relative strength of the side told in the first half and the Owls completed it without being seriously troubled, Nathan Modest the scorer for a 1-0 lead at the break.

The Steels hit back early in the second half, Andy Hirst potting a rebound from Richard O'Donnell's save, but from then on the majority of the action was in the Steels goalmouth. Akpo Sodje was however the only Owl to convert before Buxton, Beevers, McAllister and Esajas were replaced by the young guns, who signed off the match in style with a number of attempts on goal in the closing minutes.

Next up: the stern test of a Premiership team at Hillsborough, when Hull City come visiting on Saturday.
