Owls Ladies Crowned Umbro Champions

Wednesday Ladies' successful pre-season campaign continued as they were crowned Umbro International Cup Champions for 2009.

The Owls saw off competition from a number of top teams in the ladies game to lift the trophy and give the whole squad a huge boost ahead of the new season.

Everton and Hibernian were put to the sword on day one of their group stage, before Wednesday saw off Portsmouth Ladies to set-up a tense final clash against Blackburn.

Both sides were level on points going into the clash, but Wednesday knew they'd be crowned champions if the scores were level, due to their better goal difference, and that's how it finished as Blackburn failed to break down a stubborn Owls defence with the game finishing 0-0.

'We are all massively pleased with all the players over the weekend, after some very promising signs through early pre-season and the result last week we went into this tournament full of confidence,' said Daniel Duke.

'We have a very strong squad this year with the new girls coming in and offering what we didn't have, which is now fully backed up by a great coaching and backroom staff.

'We are geared up for the coming year which we have high hopes for and are laying foundations for being one of the most respected and successful women's side in the country.'
