Sodje Out For Barnsley Opener

Wednesday striker Akpo Sodje will be missing for a 'matter of weeks' after suffering a groin strain, it's been confirmed today.

The Owls striker pulled in after scoring in the 2-2 draw with Blackburn Rovers in Wednesday's final pre-season match at the weekend.

And he'll be out for the Owls' Championship opener against Barnsley this weekend, leaving Wednesday light in attacking options.

'Obviously, it's a blow to lose Akpo for Saturday and I feel desperately disappointed for the lad because he has worked so hard in pre-season,' Laws told SWFC.co.uk.

The news could mean Sodje is sidelined until the start of September.

But Laws has kept his stance of not needing anymore strikers to bolster his squad, despite Sodje's setback.

Wednesday will have Marcus Tudgay, Francis Jeffers and Leon Clarke as striker options for the weekend.

How is it humanly possible to get this many injuries?! Its a joke. This should be his last chance in my opinion.

Any other team would go out and get someone but not us. i keep hearing that strafford had turn things round, i'm still yet to be convinced.

Same here ecco. For me, we definately need another striker, Sodje & Jeffers are far too injury prone and I also think we need another winger. Im not too optimistic for the season opener anymore :(

I honestly thought that, with all of our team fit, we would put on a solid show on Saturday, with a comfortable win. I still think we'll win, but it may end up being closer than before, with only two of our four strikers fit.

Spot on Danigol, i don't think we will see Sodje till at least the middle of next month, only cure for a groin injury is rest, then he'll have to get fit again, simple not good enough, we must have the only chairman in the world that does'nt put money into the club.

Dont get me wrong I like Sodje, I think he's a top striker in this division but even when he's recovered from this injury its only a matter of time before he's injured again! We need a lot of money invested in this team, those rumours of 'imminent investment' sound good, but why spend 10m on ground improvements? surely spending a quarter of that on the ground and giving us an extra 7m or so on transfers would be the way to do it.

Owl83 no-one is being down are they, just disappointed that arguably our best player is always injured. Aren't you disappointed too?? I still think we'll beat the Dingles and I still think we'll have a great season it would just have been nice to have a fit Sodje for the full season instead of him being injured. Again. Just disappointing.

danigol if i understand correctly, it isnt us that get to decide how much of the money is spent on the ground as it is coming from the fa to make our ground worthy for world cup 2018

it must be some kind of training issue for us to get so many injurys so often as for getting rid of sodje no way stick with him he will score a lot of goals when hes fit

owl83-ure dreaming if u think our squad is good enough to go up. were miles away from going up. 2 20+ goals a season strikers for a start off and i think we need a quality winger aswell. i think sodje should think about retiring if he has another injury plagued season. we NEED strikers and with our financial situation cant afford to have a injury prone striker on the books!! this goes for jeffers aswell!!!

I agree with most of that supersibon. People are getting carried away again I think. Nethertheless there's nothing wrong with strong support and optimism. We have a decent squad, but I still think we're way off promotion contention. A QUALITY PROVEN striker is needed, someone who is gonna get 20+ goals a season and we also need a quality winger. I think we're gonna stagnate unless we have investment soon.
