Owls Ladies Held By Toon

Sheffield Wednesday Ladies FC looked to be heading for three points in their first home match of the season, only to be thwarted late on by their Newcastle counterparts.

In their first clash at their Worksop Town home base, the Owls Ladies looked on track for victory with five minutes to go thanks to a first-half Danby strike.

But, despite looking impressive in an important spell of three matches in seven days for Wednesday, Newcastle rescued a point with five minutes to go after the Wednesday bench called some late decisions by the referee into question.

Head Coach Dan Duke commented: 'After today's game it has left me feeling somewhat similar to last week.

'We played some very tidy stuff in the first half and we could have gone in at the interval with a lot more goals under our belt.

'The second half Newcastle really pressed us and asked a lot of questions of our back-line who coped admirably. Newcastle are a good side with a lot of quality, so in that sense its a good point we have earned today but on the flip side of that we should have put our chances away when they presented themselves and we probably could have kept the ball better through the second period.

'All in all the girls have really worked tremendously hard today and although I can see many positives to build on, I am a little disappointed for them as I believed they had done enough to win and take all 3 points.'

Owls: Maslin, Severns, Spencer, Sharp, Sherwood, Gingell, De Silva (Barker) Lee, Scott (Skeemer), Rich (Windle), Danby. Subs not used: Jepson, Corry.

Wednesday travel to Lincoln's Ashby Road ground for their first midweek clash of the season, kick-off 7.45pm, before hosting Curzon Ashton on Saturday, kick-off 2pm.
