Roy Keen On Wood?

The Daily Mirror reports that Richard Wood is on his way to Ipswich, for a fee in the region of £800k.

Roy Keane, in the market for re-inforcements following the Tractor Boys shaky start to the season, could be turning to the Owls' longest serving player in a bid to bolster a defence that has leaked eight goals in five games.

There has been interest in Wood since he handed in a transfer request almost a year ago: Coventry, Crystal Palace and our neighbours across town all reputed to be in the running to sign him, but Ipswich now appear to be in the hunt, after allegedly missing out on the signing of Celtic's Irish U21 defensive prospect Darren O'Dea.

Wood has played 157 league games for Wednesday since making his debut in 2003, but with less than a year to go on his current extended contract, gaffer Brian Laws may well be tempted to cash in now rather than let Wood go for free next summer.

Wood has been quality lately it would be mad to let him leave. like BL said we are trying to build a squad around our best players and hes one of them.

Sell him, bring another defender in his place and sign Hameur Bouazza on a free! Quality player. Blackpool & Coventry are trying to sign him, if they can attract his interest then we definately can! He'd be a great addition IMO.

He's wanted to go for ages, christ knows why he wanted to go to coventry before or ipswich now. If he wants to go, let him. first him, then spurr in the summer, son much for this new wave of optimism.

interesting idea there Danigol. I personally wouldn't ditch Wood. I like him, he seems to have booked his ideas up and upped his game. If, on the off chance he does leave then yes, I would probably second Danigol's suggestion.

I wouldn't choose to ditch Wood, I like him, my only concern is that his contract is up soon. Im not convinced he wants to stay in the long run so £800k sounds pretty decent to me. Obviously the problem would be getting a replacement in time, but I really think Bouazza would be a great signing! Loads of pace and technique, absolute bargain on a free too. He'd provide a different dimension going forward too cos I reckon he could play as a striker.

yeah Bouazza is definately a strong shout - I hear Jon Stead may be going to Crystal Palace for as little as 300k. that man can finish and would provide good competition up front... Just thinking aloud. What's the scope for snapping up Varney at the end of his loan, I think he's quality.

I think the Varney situation is an odd one. Derby have said the exact same thing as last time where he's 'still in their plans' but never gets a game there. Maybe in January we'll have a clearer picture but I would definately try to sign him permanantly. I would have thought for a decent price too.

800k is a very good fee. I think we should take it (if the transfer rumour is true). We have cover at the back, and it will allow us to play Purse & Beevers at the back (in my view, Beevers has far more potential that Wood, and needs game time).

im not so sure 800k is a good fee personally. it hacked me off to watch Glen Whelan leave for a fraction of his real value just because he was in his last year. Woody's worth between 3-4 million in my opinion and where I know thats completely unrealistic given his contractual situation it still doesn't alleviate the disappointment to see the mighty Owls miss out on yet another decent transfer fee.
