Roy Keen On Wood?

The Daily Mirror reports that Richard Wood is on his way to Ipswich, for a fee in the region of 800k.

Roy Keane, in the market for re-inforcements following the Tractor Boys shaky start to the season, could be turning to the Owls' longest serving player in a bid to bolster a defence that has leaked eight goals in five games.

There has been interest in Wood since he handed in a transfer request almost a year ago: Coventry, Crystal Palace and our neighbours across town all reputed to be in the running to sign him, but Ipswich now appear to be in the hunt, after allegedly missing out on the signing of Celtic's Irish U21 defensive prospect Darren O'Dea.

Wood has played 157 league games for Wednesday since making his debut in 2003, but with less than a year to go on his current extended contract, gaffer Brian Laws may well be tempted to cash in now rather than let Wood go for free next summer.

Further news when we have it on what could be an eventful transfer deadline day!

Wood has been quality lately it would be mad to let him leave. like BL said we are trying to build a squad around our best players and hes one of them.
owlswfc
Sell him, bring another defender in his place and sign Hameur Bouazza on a free! Quality player. Blackpool & Coventry are trying to sign him, if they can attract his interest then we definately can! He'd be a great addition IMO.
Danigol_10_SWFC
He's wanted to go for ages, christ knows why he wanted to go to coventry before or ipswich now. If he wants to go, let him. first him, then spurr in the summer, son much for this new wave of optimism.

interesting idea there Danigol. I personally wouldn't ditch Wood. I like him, he seems to have booked his ideas up and upped his game. If, on the off chance he does leave then yes, I would probably second Danigol's suggestion.
Carbone's Padawan
I wouldn't choose to ditch Wood, I like him, my only concern is that his contract is up soon. Im not convinced he wants to stay in the long run so 800k sounds pretty decent to me. Obviously the problem would be getting a replacement in time, but I really think Bouazza would be a great signing! Loads of pace and technique, absolute bargain on a free too. He'd provide a different dimension going forward too cos I reckon he could play as a striker.
Danigol_10_SWFC
yeah Bouazza is definately a strong shout - I hear Jon Stead may be going to Crystal Palace for as little as 300k. that man can finish and would provide good competition up front... Just thinking aloud. What's the scope for snapping up Varney at the end of his loan, I think he's quality.
Carbone's Padawan
I think the Varney situation is an odd one. Derby have said the exact same thing as last time where he's 'still in their plans' but never gets a game there. Maybe in January we'll have a clearer picture but I would definately try to sign him permanantly. I would have thought for a decent price too.
Danigol_10_SWFC
800k is a very good fee. I think we should take it (if the transfer rumour is true). We have cover at the back, and it will allow us to play Purse & Beevers at the back (in my view, Beevers has far more potential that Wood, and needs game time).
johnnywalker69
im not so sure 800k is a good fee personally. it hacked me off to watch Glen Whelan leave for a fraction of his real value just because he was in his last year. Woody's worth between 3-4 million in my opinion and where I know thats completely unrealistic given his contractual situation it still doesn't alleviate the disappointment to see the mighty Owls miss out on yet another decent transfer fee.
Carbone's Padawan
I think we can afford could let him go and get as much as we can for him. We still have strength in the defence and we could raise a bit of cash and strengthen up front, maybe make Varney a permanent thing. He's really putting himself about and making a difference. We've struggled scoring enough in recent years. But look at our goal difference now, its the best its been for ages.
MightyWednesday
Has anyone else noticed the bad blood between Woods n Purse, after scoring today Purse went to celebrate with him n Woods shrugged him off n celebrated with other players and left Purse shouting summat after him.
ollyowl70
beevers is a better centre back-800k considering his contract is up is a decent price. let him go-get bouazza or maybe julian gray?? sign varney up permenant and i think we could make a decent play-off push!!!!
supersibon
its a tough call, we have a settled eleven for the first time in yonkles, but the contract issue keeps popping up with wood doing nothing to allay our fears, move him on for a decent pricce yes, but don't give him away, julian gray is a great call, would provide the back up we need on the wings, v good player
dbblue
Bouazza has signed for Blackpool. I think its shocking that clubs like Blackpool have signed a player of that calibre and we haven't. He'd have been a great addition.
Danigol_10_SWFC
dbblue - what is it about our site that you love so much that you can't keep off it pig?
bladesforlife1889
We could say the same about you.
Auckland Owl
arr auckland i've missed you. what do you think of all the activity at your club then today mate? ha ha ha
bladesforlife1889
We have a settled squad, unlike the bunch of 'world beaters' your desperate manager has managed to cobble together. I'm well happy. If Wood goes in January, so be it, we'll just get someone else. Can't wait until we take the honours at Bumhole Lane once again.
Auckland Owl
but....... you won't be there though will you pt-auckland!! so zip it!!
bladesforlife1889
Run along now, little boy, leave us grown ups to talk about football.
Auckland Owl
It will never happen
smurf
Varney would be an ace signig, seems to have found his home since struggling at derby and charlton.
