'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Owls Ladies Down Luton

Sheffield Wednesday Ladies picked up a crucial three points with a 2-0 victory over Luton Town Ladies on Sunday afternoon.

The Owls were just four points ahead of basement dwellers Luton going into the game, and the players and staff of both sides knew the importance of the clash.

And the Owls players stepped up to the mark and produced what was asked of them by starting brightly, playing some very positive football in the Luton half, but the Londoners were equal to it.

Wednesday pushed forward and on the 20 minute mark a shot from Sarah Danby was seen into the net by in-form youngster Hollie Barker to put the Owls 1-0 up.

Luton pushed forward looking for the equaliser with a few dangerous balls over the top, but the centre back pairing of Sharp and Hobson dealt with them all, along with 'keeper Maslin sweeping up all the through balls.

Wednesday continued where they left off in the first half as they doubled their advantage on the resumption, Hayley Sharp heading in a Danby cross for her second goal of the season.

Assistant Manager Liam Kelly said: 'Pats on the backs must go to every member of the playing staff, selected or not selected; it's been a long time coming the 3 points, and our first clean sheet of the season is an important factor in our development, but we need to build on this and take it forward.

'Over the last few weeks a lot has been asked of the players and staff, honesty on the training ground has been key. And we knew as players we had to improve, as coaches we had to improve and as a club we had to improve.

'But one win does not mean we rest and lose focus, it only means we're heading in the right direction and added quality is needed all this week in training and going into a very tough game at Liverpool this weekend.'
