Vital Viewpoint - Owls vs Coventry

Our man on the spot, chapowl, provides his player ratings from the weekend.

Lee Grant - 7/10

Very little in the way of shot stopping for Granty to do today but what he did do he did well. Commanded his area and came out for crosses when necessary. Stopped the ball on the line for their goal which 'didn't cross the line'.

Tommy Spurr - 7/10

Yet again another very solid display from our man. Got forward well to support JJ down the left while putting in some great challenges at the back. Only criticism was his sometimes wayward distribution.

Mark Beevers - 7/10

Came back into the side and showed the qualities we all saw 2 seasons ago. Looked calm on the ball and typically used those long legs of his to nick the ball away from attackers in vital moments.

Darren Purse - 8/10

Arguably MOTM today, producing the type of display that Brian Laws brought him in for. Needed a confidence boost from the game and that couldn't have come any better than in the shape of a goal. Solid display summed up when he blocked a Leon Best shot in the final moments.

Lewis Buxton - 6/10

Another defender who needed an improved performance and did so. Wasn't stand out but looked a lot more solid than in recent weeks.

Jermaine Johnson - 7/10

At his blistering best in the first 30 minutes of the game, running at defenders and opening up gaps for possible chances, also looking stronger when carrying the ball. Went missing in places and sometimes suspect crossing, but overall a good game.

Darren Potter - 6/10

Sat well in the middle of the park and distributed the ball well to both flanks. Good steady performance and kept us ticking throughout.

James O'Connor - 7/10

Another good battling performance from the little man. Never stopped working and got up and down the pitch well from box to box, earning the penalty with one of his bursts. Good energy for the full 90.

Michael Gray - 7/10

Yet again tireless effort from the experienced winger. Helped Buxton when required and surged forward well, cutting inside as well as down the line. Usual quality on his crosses and dead balls.

Luke Varney - 6/10

Hard working performance from Luke but never really got into his stride and had very little sniff at goal. Linked up well with Clarke but fairly quiet day for the on loan striker.

Leon Clarke - 7/10

Continued to prove his doubters wrong with a strong display leading the line. Good link up play with the midfield and looked strong in the air. Confidence growing with each improved performance and it showed in his powerfully struck penalty.

Akpo Sodje - 6/10

Had little time to affect the game but worked hard looking for an opening and put their defense under pressure.

Sean McAllister - 6/10

Came on with his usual gritty performance but again with little time to affect the outcome of the game.

Tommy Miller - 6/10

Made an appearence in stoppage time.

Overall a good day for the Owls. Big positive was the much improved performance from Purse which will hopefully kick start his season. Accomplished performance from the defense in general, containing Best and Morrison well. Gritty display from the whole team which brought the 3 points we needed.
