Wednesday may not have had a brilliant season on the pitch, but the fans are officially the best outside the Premiership after the final average attendances of the season were sorted out yesterday.
The Owls' average gate of 24,853 was enough to see them the best supported club in the Football League - pipping Norwich City to the award by just 20 fans, who got an average gate of 24,833 this season.
Ipswich Town and Derby County were also up there, as were Owls rivals Sheffield United who could only manage an average of 23,650 despite achieving automatic promotion to the Premiership. (We'll always know who the best supported club in Sheffield are!)
Owls boss Paul Sturrock has mentioned on numerous occassions how the fans could help the side avoid relegation, and they turned out in their droves in the vital match against Norwich City recently, where over 30,000 fans cheered Wednesday on to a vital 1-0 win at Hillsborough.
Wednesday also carry the biggest gate outside the Premiership this season - with 33,439 turning up for the dissapointing steel city derby which saw the Owls lose 2-1 to their city rivals. The attendances didn't drop below 20,000 all season, with the lowest gate coming against Plymouth Arglye back in November (20,244).
The chant 'You've only come to see the Wednesday' can also be applied to a number of clubs this season, who've received their biggest gate of the season against the blue and white wizards. Derby County, Sheffield United and Leeds United have all recieved their highest gates against the Owls this season.
Aswell as having THE best home support outside the Premiership, the Owls must surely boast one of the best travelling supports in the Football League - having sold out their allocation a number of times this season.
The 2-0 victory over Derby County at the weekend saw 5,200 Owls snap up their tickets for Pride Park within two days. 5,500 Owls made the short trip to Bramall Lane in December, while big followings have also been taken to Leeds United, Hull City, Preston North End, and Coventry City on a Wednesday night. The Owls support to clubs like Plymouth Argyle, Southampton, and Brighton has also been second to none.
Hopefully Owls fans will snap up season tickets for the 2006/2007 season - which will surely see the Owls progress from this season. The magnificent support is surely a big advantage over other clubs in this division and will hopefully push the Owls further up the Championship table.
