Owls Fans: Best Outside Premiership

Wednesday may not have had a brilliant season on the pitch, but the fans are officially the best outside the Premiership after the final average attendances of the season were sorted out yesterday.

The Owls' average gate of 24,853 was enough to see them the best supported club in the Football League - pipping Norwich City to the award by just 20 fans, who got an average gate of 24,833 this season.

Ipswich Town and Derby County were also up there, as were Owls rivals Sheffield United who could only manage an average of 23,650 despite achieving automatic promotion to the Premiership. (We'll always know who the best supported club in Sheffield are!)

Owls boss Paul Sturrock has mentioned on numerous occassions how the fans could help the side avoid relegation, and they turned out in their droves in the vital match against Norwich City recently, where over 30,000 fans cheered Wednesday on to a vital 1-0 win at Hillsborough.

Wednesday also carry the biggest gate outside the Premiership this season - with 33,439 turning up for the dissapointing steel city derby which saw the Owls lose 2-1 to their city rivals. The attendances didn't drop below 20,000 all season, with the lowest gate coming against Plymouth Arglye back in November (20,244).

The chant 'You've only come to see the Wednesday' can also be applied to a number of clubs this season, who've received their biggest gate of the season against the blue and white wizards. Derby County, Sheffield United and Leeds United have all recieved their highest gates against the Owls this season.

Aswell as having THE best home support outside the Premiership, the Owls must surely boast one of the best travelling supports in the Football League - having sold out their allocation a number of times this season.

The 2-0 victory over Derby County at the weekend saw 5,200 Owls snap up their tickets for Pride Park within two days. 5,500 Owls made the short trip to Bramall Lane in December, while big followings have also been taken to Leeds United, Hull City, Preston North End, and Coventry City on a Wednesday night. The Owls support to clubs like Plymouth Argyle, Southampton, and Brighton has also been second to none.

Hopefully Owls fans will snap up season tickets for the 2006/2007 season - which will surely see the Owls progress from this season. The magnificent support is surely a big advantage over other clubs in this division and will hopefully push the Owls further up the Championship table.

" what a load of tosh- millers fans best including premiership"
not tosh - fact!! OFFICIALLY the best outside the Premiership! we took more to derby yesterday than the millers get at home matches! small town in sheffield!
Lol at millers!! go and post on your own site, they need your support and posts we dont toy tonwner!!! So go away little boy !!
" lol, our site gets ten times more visitors than yours, come to think of it so does our town, fancy living in a dump and not realising it-still you can always go and watch premiership action at the lane- one team in sheffield theres only one team in sheffield" ps- you'll never beat the MILLERS....
" wow derby, blades and leeds have there best gates against you- hardly a long way to travel is it? i notice your support for long journeys is worse than the millers- now thats what you call support"
is it worth even responding to this guy? he must be a schoolkid - he knows absolutely NOTHING about football. Whats the deal about your site getting more hits than this? I very much doubt it does. More posts on your message board maybe, but NOT more hits. And our travelling support is also the best in the Football League - FACT. I doubt the Millers would take 3,000 to Southampton, they don't even get that at home. Please, don't come on here embarassing yourself again. You can't argue with FACTS, and the FACTS are we're the best supported club outside the Premiership :) PS - never beat the Millers? Remind me of the score the LAST TIME we played you, 2-0 eh? You really are a numpty!
" spirty you really are a kid, what age? on comparison our support is better than yours, ill explain it for you as you are from sheffield- we get average 5,000 out of them 2,500 follow us everywhere, giving us a bigger percentage than you-NUMPTY- also don't go telling me about facts- vital rotherham gets more using the forum and more hits( treble yours) so crawl back in the woodwork you bafoon"
oh...dear....are the only insults you can offer one's that I've already used on you? You do NOT take 2,500 everywhere. If you like, I could trawl around club sites finding out the amount you take to away games, but I dont have the same amount of time on my hands as you. School in the morning, eh?
" at least you admitted the best team in yorkshire are the blades- and always have been- next season will see your little big club relegated , you always think you are one cut above everyone- thats why you are despised so much. please do not come on our site again as you bore the pants off us with your useless drivel- oh by the way work in morning ( senior management) i take it you are back at nursery- by the way does your carer know wheres he/she has put your dummy? , goodnight and goodluck tomorrow"
ahahahahah! just looked on the Swansea website and there's a picture of the Millers fans at their ground!!! 2,500 you say? More like 100!! Worst support I've ever seen!!! PS - You must be earning PEANUTS as you talk drivel. And if you work in Rotherham, you really MUST be earning peanuts!
I hear they have problems counting the crowd at Millmoor anyway, apparently they can never get the attendance right on the day. The bloke with the pencil and clipboard must hava heck of a problem ticking off the fans running around free on those empty terraces. Plus there's the 400 or so fans in the toilets, sh*ting themselves at the prospect of the drop into Division Two. You know, I never used to have a problem with Rotherham, until millers4eva came along. Still, we'll probably never see him at Hillsborough for a couple of reasons: millers4eva spends so much time on the computer he never leaves the house, but, more importantly, Rotherham will never make it back up the league to get on our fixture list.

this Rotherham fan is really getting boring now, I wonder if he'll be back nxt week when they're down??
If he carries on like he does, and they DO go down, we'll be all over their forum like a rash, right? :-)
Auckland Owl
" id sooner work in ROTHERHAM than the slum that is sheffield, see you in division 1 real soon"
I pity the fool :)
I too have never really had anything against the millers. I even gave some money to help them stay afloat as it seems a shame to lose a club. Millers4eva (hilarious name) has changed all that. You clearly care very much about your cause (hating sheffield wednesday). However, no sheffield wednesday fan cares at all about rotherham. Your arguments about which is the best city to live in seems to suggest that you are perhaps looking for attention rather than anything else. I guess that if I supported a little team that is about to become extinct then I might look for attention too. Might I suggest that you do this elsewhere though as your repeated bleatings are really very boring. Might I add that if your are indeed in senior management (and I doubt that very much) then I pity your staff as the pettyness you have consistently shown on this site is beyond belief.
here here, what he said! Although I'd never want another club to go under...
apologies, that was not meant to read that way. I dont want the millers to fold. However people like millers4eva make me want them to go down... Rotherham fans are like Leeds fans hating Manchester United. The united fans could not care less.
I know what you're saying mate. They're like those little midgets you get bothering you in the summer, bless em!
