Laws: Varney Loan Move Likely

Wednesday boss Brian Laws has revealed an extension of Luke Varney's loan deal at Hillsborough is more likely than a permanent transfer from Derby County.

The former Crewe and Charlton striker's loan stint at S6 is due to expire in January and the Owls boss is already weighing up his options with the January transfer window approaching.

Although Varney hasn't been the 20-plus goals a season man many were hoping since his arrival, his form has impressed Wednesdayites and Laws.

But Laws has ruled out a permanent move for the striker unless new finances are in place to purchase the 27-year-old on a full deal.

'It goes two ways here, one - absolutely no chance if we don't get new finances ourselves because as it stands, Luke Varney has not just got this season but a further two years with Derby County,' he told SkySports.com.

He continued: 'But we could possibly still have him on loan for the second part of the season, there's still that opportunity and that's the avenue we are looking down currently.'

It's unlikely any money received from the potential sale of Richard Wood will cover the fee for Varney.
