McGovern Leads Owls Exodus

Owls boss Paul Sturrock has announced that three of the five out-of-contract Wednesday players will not be offered a new contract.

Jon-Paul McGovern, Drissa Diallo and Richie Partridge will all be leaving the club in the summer after one-on-one discussions with Sturrock at Middlewood training ground yesterday.

Owls club captain Lee Bullen has verbally agreed a one-year extension to his contract, while 'keeper David Lucas is currently pondering over a deal to keep him at the club.

The release of fans favourite McGovern will come as a shock to most Wednesdayites. With the former player of the season not yet back to full fitness, fans thought the gaffer may give him another season to prove his fitness after an injury-plagued 2005/2006 season.

Most expected Richie Partridge to leave after the former Liverpool winger was given few chances to prove his worth despite agreeing a six-month contract extension back in December 2005.

Defender Drissa Diallo was also expected to leave the club after he fell down the pecking order at Hillsborough following his move north from Ipswich in the summer.

Sturrock has also announced that Craig Rocastle - currently on loan at Swindon Town - and young defender Patrick Collins will also be free to find new clubs. David Graham, who is currently on loan at Huddersfield, has had his loan extended until the end of the play-offs and his future will be discussed after.

pretty gutted to see mcgovern go. He is the main reason we won the play offs in my opinion. sob sob

I was quite surprised at that too. Thought he would be given a year at least as he's hardly been fit the season. Will be a good buy for someone at League One level at least. Hopefully this means the boss has someone better lined up this summer!

Is it just me but hasn't JP been treated just a little bit shabbilly by the club, Maclean hasn't proven himself in this league but will get the chance, no chance for poor old JP, a young player with lots of promise who just had his first season with injuries after a flawless season previously, a season when his ability and enthusiasm helped propel us to promotion, surely this was worth a 1 year contract. Other than this I feel that the boss has done right by the club particularly with a view to Bullen and Lucas.

maybe Sturrock knows something we dont? McGovern always seems to be out on the lash whenever Im in Sheffield so Sturrock may be trying to get that culture out of the squad. He said he needs to move players on to get new ones in so he should have someone lined up.

Quite a shock to say the least! Will we get cash for Rocastle then or is his contract up anyway? Same with collins but I cant see us getting much for him!

Maybe his behaviour while he was out was something to do with it.. I'm always happy to see any pie eaters and the Smirnoff Ice brigade leave. Proudlock hasn't pulled up anny tress since he 'left', has he?

to be fair his behaviour while in town isn't a problem, I didnt want to get him into trouble! it just always seem to be the same people out, one of which was Peacock and hes been shown the door. he did put on a bit of weight aswell but i suppose thats expected. maybe he just thought he wasnt good enough for this level.

club website says it was due to medical problem, any thoughts? it must be somthing either long term, or a problem that was always likely to start again, back etc.

Looks like we're just going to have to trust our glorious leader on this one. Let's hope he's done the right thing.
