Owls New Boy - A Palace Fan's View

Owls New Boy - A Palace Fan's View

Wednesday's new loan signing Tom Soares is in line for his first start in the famous blue and white stripes against Reading tomorrow. We get a Palace fan's view on him.

He may be on loan at Hillsborough from Stoke City, but the midfielder has struggled for a place in Tony Pulis's squad in the Premier League.

Soares made his name at Selhurst Park, so Vital spoke to Palace fan Jon Stayton about his qualities and successes at Palace, before his big-money move to Stoke.

He said: 'He runs around a lot and certainly tries pretty damned hard. His touch isn't always perfect, and he's as likely to spray a pass into row Z, as he is to provide that delightful through ball.

'In reality, he's one of the best academy graduates we've had in recent years.

'At Palace, the fans would get on his back at the slightest mistake. He became a target for them. But what they didn't remember was that he was still only a kid. It was to his credit that he'd been in the first team squad since the age of about 17.

'Just before he left us for Stoke (which incidentally was because we were skint and couldn't offload anyone else, not because we wanted to see him go) he was having his best spell ever and had scored something like seven (goals) in ten.

'As for Stoke, he never had a look-in, but in terms of Palace, he was going from strength to strength.

'He has a great engine, will give you 100% for 90 minutes, and is the archetypal box to box player.

'Just take it easy when he makes a mistake. He's no Viera, but he's pretty handy at this level.'

So it sounds like Soares could well be a good capture by Brian Laws, although the last quote could well be worrying as a Wednesdayite, especially at this moment in time when everyone from the chairman to the tea lady are getting stick.

It seems it could take time for the midfielder to settle into the Wednesday squad, but it could well be a gamble that pays off for Brian Laws as he looks to keep Wednesday away from the relegation spots in the Championship.
