Hillsborough Picked For World Cup Bid

Hillsborough Picked For World Cup Bid

Hillsborough has been picked as part of England's 2018 World Cup bid after beating off competition from a number of other stadia, including Bramall Lane.

Sheffield has been picked as a potential host city for the prestigious event, with Hillsborough beating Bramall Lane to stage matches.

London, Manchester, Sunderland, Birmingham, Nottingham, Liverpool, Leeds, Milton Keynes, Newcastle, Bristol and Plymouth have also been picked as part of the bid.

'I have no doubt that this process has strengthened our bid considerably,' Football League and selection panel chairman Lord Mawhinney told BBC Sport.

'There is a temptation to think of bids in terms of just stadia but we have spent a long time talking about travelling, accommodation and security and the decision we have made constitutes a composite of all the criteria that goes towards what makes a good host city.'

Strange, that this coincides with news of a 20M investment in the Star today. Maybe, just maybe this was the news investors were waiting for (to own a stadium used at the world cup would be nice!) or maybe, just more Bu***hit!

Common sense has prevailed. Hillsborough was always a more attractive proposition than Bramall Lane. The transport links are second to none, Bramall Lane's major flaw (apart from the seats facing the pitch) is it is in the city centre. Hillsborough has the jewel in the crown with Hillsborough Park on the doorstep.

Fantastic news. Although the ground needs a bit of tlc it is clearly better the lane. I don't think the lane is any better than oakwell. Always seems small to me. One of the stands in particular. I am well happy about this.
