Monday's Bank Holiday matches in the Champonship proved costly for Wednesday, as they could only sit and watch other results go against them.
With Wednesday's Championship clash at Blackpool being postponed due to a frozen pitch at Bloomfield Road, Sean McAuley and his men knew they could slide down the table.
And they did just that, as Plymouth Argyle continued their hot run of form with a superb 4-1 home success against Reading, while bottom side Peterborough performed heroics of their own to come from 4-0 down against Cardiff at half-time to draw 4-4.
It moved Wednesday down to 23rd in the Championship table, just a point above rock-bottom Posh, and now four points adrift of Scunthorpe United, who sit above the relegation spots.
Wednesday could take plenty of positives from their 2-2 draw against table-topping Newcastle on Boxing Day, and will have been going into their match at the seaside full of confidence of getting a result today.
But it wasn't to be, and although McAuley will be focussing only on his Wednesday side to pick up results, the results of others will have come as a big blow.
Especially at Plymouth, who looked doom to League 1 football before changing manager and picking up impressive back-to-back wins over the festive period.
If a 1-0 win at high-flying Cardiff wasn't enough, a 4-1 thumping of Reading seemed even better to lift the Pilgrims above Wednesday at a vital time of the season.
Peterborough too will have taken plenty from their showing in the 4-4 draw against the Bluebirds today.
Looking down and out at 4-0 down at half-time, the Posh showed they have plenty of fighting spirit to steal a point with four goals in a superb second half for the hosts.
We've certainly got a fight on our hands, and January is going to be a big, big month.
