Owls Locked In Varney Talks

Sheffield Wednesday are locked in talks with Championship rivals Derby County about bringing loan striker Luke Varney back to Hillsborough for the rest of the season.

Varney's loan deal came to an end in December after he picked up a fifth booking of the season which ruled him out of what would have been his last game against Blackpool on Monday.

But the former Crewe and Charlton man has revealed he's keen to remain an Owl after falling out of favour with Rams boss Nigel Clough.

But with Wednesday's managerial position up in the air, it's unclear whether the Owls are looking to bring him in on another loan deal, permanently, or whether they're waiting until a new man takes the managerial hotseat.

Rams boss Clough told the official Derby site: 'Luke's loan is up and he is back with us at the moment, although he is suspended for Saturday.

'We're still in discussions with Sheffield Wednesday about what they want to do with Luke in terms of extending the loan or a permanent deal, so at the moment it's a case of seeing what comes up in the next few weeks.'

The 27-year-old made 15 starts in the blue and white stripes in a four-month loan spell, netting four goals along the way.
