Varney Linked With Owls Return

Varney Linked With Owls Return

Derby County's out-of-favour striker Luke Varney has been linked with a return to Hillsborough on a loan deal until the end of the season.

The former Charlton and Crewe man spent four months on loan at S6 this season before returning to Pride Park after the Owls' Boxing Day clash against Newcastle United.

But Varney isn't in the picture at the Rams under the leadership of boss Nigel Clough, and doesn't look to be in the near future.

It could mean new Owls boss Alan Irvine brings the striker back to Hillsborough for the rest of the season, something which today's Mirror points towards.

Varney is keen to secure a move back to S6, but Irvine could well be looking at other options.

I like him but I do think that if we are to bring someone in then it needs to be someone a bit more prolific than Varney

Agreed Hickyowl, I think Irvine will have his own loan targets. Sodje does a similar job to Varney so if we let him go back out to Charlton and bring Varney back in we'd just be shuffling cards. No real point.

I have to say that I do not see Sodje and Varney as being similar. Sodje is big, strong as huge phsical presence and should be holding the ball up an bringing others in to play. Varney is a runner, who breaks forward at pace. It would be quite possible to accomodate both in the team with Varney running off Sodje.

I think they're very similar in the way that both run, close down defenders, plenty of huff & puff, with no real clinical edge. Agreed they could both play together, but lets face it, if Varney comes back, then Sodje will go back out.

I'd rather have a fit Sodje than Varney. I know he did not get that much of a chance, but he seemed to know where the goal was

Sodje would be my preference and I think he is a real handful with a decent finish - when he's fit! However, no-one can ignore how injury prone he is and then he needs time to get back to match fitness etc. If Sodje had any chance of staying fit then I would prefer him all day long but I just can't see it happening so I think Varney is a better option - at least until we're in a better position to be able to bring in a real striking threat. It saddens me to say it but with Sodje's injury record I would let him go.

I hate to say it, but I agree with you baldowl. He looked like he could have been excellent for us, but he just spent too much time on the treatment table

Sodje is a waste of wages becaue he can't get fit, besides the fact that he wants to sign for charlton, in which case we should let him go, and varney is just all workmanship with no actual quality, his decision making on the ball is terrible, what with his endless long range shots that barely reach the goal, an if he can't get anywhere near derby's squad that should speak volumes! hopefully we can have a look at someone new, we've got into this mess with varney up front so what's the point in bringing him back?

Think Irvine should forget both Varney and Sodje and find two new strikers, how i dont know but im sure he'l have some names of strikers in mind, wether he can get these targets is another matter with Wednesdays limited funds. However banking on Sodje staying fit and Varney getting more goals i just cant see it.Irvine needs to make big changes quickly otherwise cant see them surviving with current players in the team !!
