BREAKING: Varney Returns To Owls

Derby County striker Luke Varney has returned to Hillsborough on a loan deal until the end of the season.

The former Charlton and Crewe hitman spent the first half of the current campaign in the blue and white of Wednesday after being deemed surplus to requirements at Pride Park.

And the 27-year-old has secured a return to S6 in time for Saturday's crunch clash against relegation rivals Peterborough United.

Former Wednesday boss Brian Laws introduced Varney to the Owls faithful.

But new boss Alan Irvine has agreed to Varney's return, something which was maybe helped by an injury to Jermaine Johnson at Blackpool on Tuesday.

'Luke Varney is a player that I have admired very much since he started his league career at Crewe.,' Irvine told the official SWFC website.

'He has a tremendous work ethic and the right attributes that I seek in a player. Luke has already proved himself a very popular player during his two loan spells so far with Sheffield Wednesday and I am delighted to welcome him back to the club for the rest of the season.'

Varney is set to go straight into the squad for this weekend's visit of Peterborough.

good news, especially with an injury to johnson, doesnt score as many as i would like, but effort that he puts in makes up for this, hope he scores on sat!

With Irvine stating last week that he couldn't bring anyone in unless someone went out, can we assume that someone is leaving? Great to see Varney back, but I hope it doesn't mean we are set to lose Grant or Tudgay.

Or the investment could have arrived north stand owl! I some how doubt it though. I think this is a good signing for us even if we have had to spend money we don't have....at least he gives 100%.

I think he provides something we don't get from others on our books so he is a welcome addition. I am not certainabout the finacial position we "sold" Wood therefore this must have generated funds. I suspect Irvine will being another couple of players in before the 3 month loan period ends in first week of February. I also suspect if we got a good offer for Grant he would be sold. I accept Grant is a good goal keeper but others in this division and beow are as good if not better for example Loach and Smithies. Hence we may be able to find a reasonable keeper and strengthen areas of the team where we are short namely right side of defence.

Haha Cliff, is that what we're all obliged to say now as Wednesdayites? Start every comment with 'the investment may have arrived'? I'm surprised Varneys not getting a warmer welcome, 1 every 3 starts is a good return in whats generally been a team not winning many games and not making many chances, and we know he works well with Tudgay.
