Owls Set For £300k Bougherra Swoop

Owls boss Paul Sturrock is set to make a £300,000 swoop for highly-rated young Algerian defender Madjid Bougherra, who impressed on-loan at Crewe this season.

As reported on Vital Sheffield Wednesday last week, Wednesday are among a host of Premiership and Championship clubs chasing the Gueugnon defender, and are now willing to put their money where their mouth is with a 300k bid to bring Bougherra to Hillsborough.

Sturrock has said he wants to bring at least five new players in to boost his squad ahead of the 2006/2007 season, and has been given the go-ahead to increase the wage budget at the club by Chairman Dave Allen.

The 23-year-old moved to Crewe on-loan at the end of January in a bid to help them avoid relegation to League One. He appeared 11 times for the Railwaymen, including the 2-0 victory over the Owls at Gresty Road in April.

Alex only lost three times in the eleven Bougherra appeared in since his loan-move, but it was not enough to keep the Railwaymen in the Championship. The French-born defender impressed a number of English clubs during his stay here, and his French club Gueugnon are likely to accept offers around the £300k mark.

hes a great player would be great for anyone who bought him.
jono_forest
with him, cocko and woody at the back we would have a good centre back department

oh yeah, sorted across the whole defense, bullen, simek, hills, gilbert, wood, cocko, bischoff and this new lad.

Im still not sure about hills, hes good going forward but he doesnt fill me with confidence at the back. Saying that I dont think Sturrock will go for a new left back, his priority will be a centre back. He may use wingbacks next season, which would probably suit the current defensive structure we have.

I've only seen Bougherra play one but Id still take him over Bischoff (I dont think Bischoff is a bad player btw, just fed up of crocks being at S6!)
