Irvine Blasts 'Awful' Owls

Wednesday boss Alan Irvine pulled no punches in his post-match press conference following the 5-0 defeat at Reading yesterday.

Irvine watched on as his side were demolished in emphatic style by the Royals in what was billed as a proverbial 'six pointer' going into the game at the Madjeski Stadium.

He described the performance as 'awful' and will no doubt be hard at work on the training pitch this week as the Owls prepare for a huge game at home against Leicester City at Hillsborough next weekend.

'We were awful all over the pitch,' he told the official SWFC website.

'Even prior to the first goal, we were poor in possession and players didn't take responsibility when they needed to. Our defending was poor, there was nothing that I could have said 'we did that quite well'. Hopefully, this is just a one-off.'

The Owls boss also insisted his men need to have the 'mental strength' to come through their battle against relegation and show plenty of character if they're to pull themselves away from danger.

Fully agree with Irvine, I was there and it was a shamblesl. Still, lost 6-0 there last season so this is obviously an improvment on that, frankly though it could have been double figures. very very poor, made Reading look like promotion candidates.

Hopefully just a one-off? What about the other **** displays from recent weeks? They were shocking against Ipswich and Doncaster, poor against Blackpool (but got the result) and Plymouth. The only good performance recently has been against Forest, and we lost that one as well!
swfcjambo
Very concerned playing so poorly and loosing so heavily against a fellow relegation candidate, could understand it if it was against one of the top teams pushing for promotion, can't afford to lose to teams around you in the league especially by that margin. Got some tough games coming up as well so may have to watch from behind a cushion, based on the last few games we're going down!

yeovill at home on a tuesday night in january cant wait NOT!!!!!!

I keep saying it and saying it till im blue n white in the face give the youngsters a go cos the outfield players at the moment arnt fit to play in pub side.8goals conceded in 3 games and none for how **** is that.In our last 6 games we've W 2 D 0 L 4 F 5 A 11

If we carry on with same old Brian Laws team doing the same thing every game, we are going down. Something has got to drastically change now! not next season when its too late and we're fighting to get out of league one again. We cant just keep on blaming the players saying they're not trying hard enough, please try harder, the fact is some of them just are'nt good enough. It seems to be in that midfield area where we are in disarray.
MightyWednesday
in my view were already down!!!!! were playing diabolical football with a diabolical squad!!!!! can anyone, based on the past few performances, honestly see us staying up???
supersibon
Agree with you ollyowl70, the likes of Lekaj, Modest, Wragg, Boden would be really up for it to make their mark! I'm not saying play all of them but give 1 or 2 a go. At least then if we do go down, we have blooded some players who will probably be our first team next year, as the likes of Tudgay, Beevers, Purse etc.. would be gone.
owl1
Awful the lot of them. I am not going again this year. Not Irvines fault just the squad is *****e

The team currently at hillsborough are awful. Players such as potter, spurr,o'connor, tudgay, clarke, esajas do not deserve shirts. We need to give oppurtunities to young and upcoming players such as boden, lekaj, modest and palmer. Agree totally with OLLYOWL70 and OWL1.The investment cant come quick enough(if there is any), and strafford needs to go quickly. hope we can stay up but based on performances ov late, its going to be an uphill struggle and very difficult. Up THE OWLS but the tyeam, needs a complete re-shuffle and clear out
