Owls goalkeeper David Lucas has turned down the club's latest offer of a six-month contract and will leave the club for pastures new.
The former Preston North End stopper was offered a six-month contract to prove his fitness after suffering a knee injury which will see him sidelined until December.
But Lucas has today informed Owls boss Paul Sturrock that he has played his last game in a Wednesday shirt. He will continue to train with the Owls to recover from his knee injury but will be playing his football elsewhere when fully recovered.
Lucas told the Sheffield Star: 'I just feel that by the time I do get fit, Wednesday are going to have brought in Scott or somebody else, and I won't be playing. This gives me more freedom to give myself the best options and most opportunities. I'm looking forward with optimism, and looking forward to playing again.'
Lucas enjoyed achieving promotion with the Owls from League One, and said he will always remember his time at Hillsborough for all the right reasons.
He continued: 'It's said. When I made the decision, I was a bit upset about it, because I've really enjoyed my time at Wednesday but now I'm looking for a new opportunity somewhere else.'
Lucas, who moved to Hillsborough from Lancashire two years ago for a fee of £100,000, will continue to work on his rehibilitation at Middlewood Road and revealed the club will be helping him find a new club.
'The club have an obligation to look after me; I have a good relationship with the manager and the physios and, given a programme, am experienced enough to do most of it on my own.' he continued.
Lucas was twice loaned out to the Owls from Preston but made the move permanent in the summer of 2004 for a fee of £100,000. He made 52 league appearances for the club, and we wish him all the best for the future.
