Irvine Targets Varney And Nolan

Wednesday boss Alan Irvine has revealed that last season's loan duo Luke Varney and Eddie Nolan are on his rader as he looks to bolster his squad for next season.

Both players impressed the Owls boss during their loan stints at Hillsborough last term, despite not being enough to help Wednedsday avoid the drop.

And Irvine will hold discussions to bring both back to help the Owls bounce straight back to the Championship from League One next term.

Former Crewe man Varney, who netted nine goals on loan from Derby County last season, is surplus to requirements at Pride Park under boss Nigel Clough.

That could pave the way for an Owls swoop.

But Irvine has told the Sheffield Star that it's going to be 'very difficult' to sign Varney on a permanent basis due to wage demands.

It could mean the striker returns on a loan basis - again - with Varney almost certain not to feature for the Rams at present.

Defender Nolan, who also enjoyed a loan stint last term, is also out of favour with Preston boss Darren Ferguson and Irvine, who initially took him to Deepdale, is keen to bring him back to S6.

Irvine told the Star: 'Preston have made it known that Eddie might be available but on what basis I don't know at this stage.'

Isn't this just reinforcing failure? If this is all there is to offer Mr Irvine, I'd go to Coventry if I were you.

i agree robc,Nolan i dont mind but varneys a big no no,cant fault his work rate but its goals we need and wud rather us spend a decent amount on a quality striker/s,thats where we av lacked over the years and also a midfield playmaker.

forget varney, try and get paynter or austin from swindon!

i agree why buy players who got us relegated the whole point of releasing players is to refresh the squad not sign the same rubbish i would rather give promising young talent a chance who have something to prove.

Sort of agree but I like Varney. I'll tell you why.. he scored loads of goals in League one. Yes he hasn't settled in Champ. I imagine he would come on loan again. There is a massive gulf between the champ and league one. I saw alot of games last year in that league being near Colchester Utd ground and it was awful. We played some decent stuff last year but couldn't score. Sort that and get a defender who don't give away sloppy goals we won't struggle that much. Optimist. Unbelievable I know.

I think Varney is a decent striker and its not his fault that he couldn't do much in our useless team last season. Personally, I seem him as much more of an out and out striker than Tudgay, who is full of fancy tricks and flicks but little else. I reckon Varney is a better bet than Tudgay in League 1 and I'd let Tudgay go for a decent offer with no hesitation.
