Owls Chairman Strafford Resigns

Wednesday chairman Lee Strafford has resigned from his position at Hillsborough with immediate effect.

Wednesdayite Strafford has been searching for investment into the club since his arrival.

But Wednesday have announced that former manager Howard Wilkinson will take over as interim chairman until the start of next season in August.

Wilkinson has been acting as technical advisor to the Wednesday board over the last year and has stepped up to work as interim chairman to aid in the club's restructuring over the summer.

Wilkinson said: 'I would like to thank Lee for all his work over the past 18 months. He is a true fan of Sheffield Wednesday and his efforts towards rebuilding this club should not be forgotten.

'It is an honour for me to become Chairman, albeit I stress that this will only be on an interim basis. My focus now is on working with Alan Irvine to build a strong team and one that is capable of achieving promotion back to the Championship as soon as possible.

'It has been a tough few weeks for everybody who cares about Sheffield Wednesday but by working together, we must try to ensure that we are able to look forward to a brighter season ahead.'

More, no doubt, to follow.

I think he realised that investment was tougher than he expected! What direction do we go in now??

Very disappointed in this news. I bought 2 season tickets for last season and 2 for next simply because I thought we were going forward with Lee Strafford. Bad news is never-ending at this club.

Can't say I blame him, after all the garbage he has had to put up with. Its something everyone could do without. Here's a guy with Sheffield Wednesday at heart & all he ever gets is flak. Thanks for all you have done & good luck for the future.

Maybe he had been reading some of the inane criticisms of him that had been posted on this site. It's a crushing blow. He was a breath of fresh air as chairman and managed to instill some belief in the club, putting Wednesday's interests before his own. Let's hope we get someone who can continue to raise Wednesday's profile with investors.

i dont blame him the amount of stick he was getting. i think some people believe it should be so easy to get investment into the club. the fact is we have lots of debt, are in league 1, have a poor squad, and our averaging way below what we should be getting. thought he did an good job as he could of. Gutted- always liked Lee and felt he'd take us forward from here. I too feel he got far too much flak when he relentlessly tried to get us on the right path. My concern is where do we go from here? Is Alan Irvine reassured by all of this? I doubt it... Who's next to jump ship?

I think people need to get off his back the poor guy. It can't be easy for a Wednesdayite to be chairman of his beloved club, I wouldn't want the job. He got spirits raised at S6 and did a good job. Ok, at times he said things we didn't like but hey we haven't made it easy for him either. Good luck to him I say and thanks. God only knows where we go from here. Gonna be an interesting summer me thinks, thank god we've got the World Cup to take over the misery of failure ha ha!!! UTO's WTID

Oh my god.... I am sorry but I amtrying to understand you people defending Lee. Right, heres a guy who yes is a supposedly Owls fan yes the club was still is in a bad way finicially. Now, he apparently has money and has never really put any of it it. The guy spins news he gets everyone to believe things are going to happen we get exicted then guess what nothing happens. Then its our fault we didn't buy enough tickets or enough shirts or burgers whatever. We have been relegated partly to him because he didn't get rid of Laws earlier enough and how him and Laws that Squad was good enough to get promotion last year then then that says it all surely. Now, I don't argue yes he has done some good things i.e local charity things lost us money with the shirt deal abd also got our ground reconised as potential world cup facility. But I am sorry, something was not right with him and I rightly likened him to New Labour Tony Blair and all the spin. I am glad he has gone hes kind of stablized a sinking ship and helped get us relegated. I am just amazed you lot seem thing hes great. Hes not. Alot of this stuff was done for his own good, makes him look great in the community. I hope and just maybe the Americans or another party wants to put money in and they didn't want an obstructive person in the way. Its about time this club sorted itself out and it won't happen until things happen off the pitch that make things better on it. Long Comment but some of the above made me so annoyed.

Talk bout jumping out of the sinking ship, always thought captain was last to leave the ship. And if its down to stick from ere di dums sticks n stones.Gutless realises he cant do wot he set out to do and now resigns.Cant c this making much difference to the club cos he never put any money into help us out anyway. He came he tried he failed so now he can concentrate on buying season tickets for him and his family.

i wish him well for the future he had no choice but to go after much promised investment failed to materialise he did overhaul everything at the club apart from the football side and this has been his downfall you cannot play championship football with a league 1 budget eventually it will catch up with you which it has.

We sure have got some n*b head supporters never mind BFL, theres no wonder he's resigned. He's a proper wednesdayite and did his very best for a club he loves with limited resources. No one else wanted the poison chalice. He was our only hope of getting this club on it feet again and was doing his damdist to do it. Come back Lee thats what I say.

Ok yes I may have over reacted slightly.. but I was never convinced with him. If he did suffer threats to him and family then that is a disgrace. I do wish him well, but think we need some serious financial clout or we will be in all sorts of trouble. No offence Owls mad.

All u Strafford haters listen, This is a normal guy- like us who worked hard in life to get wher he is, he sold plus net for 2million pounds and i dnt think any wednesday fan here would'nt do the same as strafford did no1 can say they would invest Any of ther money into the club, he worked for free, he put up with all the complants, he tried to get this club back on track and all these so called wednesday fans cant see that, Look what he's done - bring the band back, make the club more family friendly, get us as a host city for the 2018 world cup, developing the stadium etc little things like this make the club better, we all know its been a s**t season and we all know that wer not the best of teams but to say lee strafford has done nothing at all and all he does is talk dog poo well thats just b*****ks, ino he sed sum stupid things but the guy tried hard and i thank him for that and say gud luck to him Finally lest hope we get another offer and lets put this all behind us and start off fresh :P At least we still got Alan Irvine

At least LS got off his arse and tried to do something positive about the club he loves, more than can be said of most Wednesday fans who prefer to sit behind their PC slagging off everything anybody tries to do, good on you for giving it a go LS and personally I don't blame you for walking away. Better to try and fail than to not even bother trying in the first place. If the football operations can be sorted out the club is in a far better posiiton to move forward than it was before LS came along, he's built some foundations we now need a investor to come in and help AI build us a team to be proud of.

Thanks Mr Strafford for everything you have done off the field, because you influenced very little on it. Yes we are a community club, great. Promised investment, didnt lie, but didnt achieve it in 18 months. However, Mr Strafford has fell on his sword. He has actually done the honourable thing. There are others on the board who really ought to have a serious look at themselves. Grierson for one (the accountant amoung them). I have bought the season tickets for next season like 9000 others. The money was promised for squad improvements. So, when the last window opened with a month of the season left, why didnt they gamble 100,000 of it to get a striker who was capable of hitting a barn door with a shot gun, unlike the others. It didnt happen. By the way, that equates to 200 season tickets in the 'Grand stand' Nothing grand about it, choked on smoke on the last game, and no running water in either mens or womens toilets. Anyway, collectively the directors, all of them failed the club in a bad way. So, all the best in the future Mr Strafford, you were obviously well meaning, and did try doing something. The others who are still there have a lot to answer for, and not hide behind Howad Wilkinson.

Not at all Ecco, in many of my posts I often comment on the fantastic support wednesday get home and away year after through thick and thin although in the last 15 years it's been mostly thin. I'd love to be a season ticket holder as would my old man who's supported wednesday since the 60's but living in West Sussex it's just not practical, we get up to hillsborough as often as work and family committments allow and support the club financially by buying kits etc. My old man has just got his first tattoo at the age of 64, it's the Owls badge on his arm, he can't stop showing it off!
