Owls Win At Cardiff - Five Years On
With Millwall facing Swindon Town in today's League One Play-Off final, it sparks memories of Wednesday's promotion via the same route - five years ago to the day.
On Saturday, May 29, the Owls saw off Hartlepool United 4-2 after extra time at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, a day that will live long in the memory of Wednesdayites.
I believe the Owls still hold the record for taking the most supporters to the stadium for an English league of cup match to be held there during the time that Wembley was being refurbished.
That was mainly down to Hartlepool failing to sell their entire allocation and handing more tickets to us but still, a record is a record!
Steve Maclean's second-half introduction and his penalty - which seemed to take forever - somehow finding its way by the Hartlepool stopper to take the game to extra-time, and after a debatable foul on Drew Talbot at that.
Whelan's extra-time strike and Talbot's superb goal to wrap up the tie will live with Wednesdayites forever - indeed, it was a superb day in Cardiff.
Wednesday find themselves back in League One next season and boss Alan Irvine will no doubt want to give Owls fans more happy memories - whether that be through automatic promotion or through the play-offs, this time at Wembley.
