Irvine Rules Out Parkin, Varney Signings

Wednesday manager Alan Irvine has ruled out the possibility of bringing Preston striker Jon Parkin and Derby hitman Luke Varney to Hillsborough next season.

The duo have both been heavily linked with a summer switch to S6 as Irvine looks to bolster his squad for the forthcoming npower League One campaign.

But the Owls boss has today ended speculation on both, by pouring cold water on moves for either player.

He told the Sheffield Star: 'I've never thought Luke Varney was an option, not with the wages he's on.

'And Jon Parkin, for certain, would not be an option. Preston are happy with him and want to keep him, so anyone who wants him will have to pay a transfer fee.'

There's still a slim chance that Varney, deemed surplus to requirements at Pride Park under boss Nigel Clough, could arrive back at S6 on another loan deal next season.

But it's more likely that Irvine will opt to bolster his squad with permanent signings instead of loan options next term.

But he could still return to his former club to bolster the Owls squad, with striker Neil Mellor still on his list of potential signings.
