Freescoring Owls Breeze By Friendlies

Freescoring Owls Breeze By Friendlies

Freescoring Wednesday made light work of their opening domestic friendly fixtures - beating Stocksbridge Park Steels 6-1 and Hallam FC 9-0 tonight.

The Owls split their senior squad down the middle for the double header - and the move seemed to have paid off with two emphatic wins.

At the Look Local Stadium, new signing Neil Mellor made a superb introduction to the Wednesday faithful in attendance by bagging four goals on his debut in the blue and white stripes.

Jermaine Johnson also bagged a brace in a match which saw assistant boss Rob Kelly take charge from the sidelines.

It got better at Hallam FC as Wednesday, watched by boss Alan Irvine, smashed nine by their hosts.

Marcus Tudgay bagged a hat-trick, while Paul Heffernan also showed Wednesdayites his scoring ability with a brace, as did Tommy Miller, while Lewis Buxton and Luke Boden also netted.

Wednesday are now set to field a stronger squad for the trip to Grimsby Town, who beat Frickley Athletic 3-0 tonight, on Saturday.

Finally, got some good goal scorers, glad to see tudders on the score sheet, wonder what the score would have been if morrison could have played? tbh i think it will be tough to keep the same 11 each game. im thinking mellor and morrison upfront with tudgay just behind them.

I think Irvine will use a front three especially at home. I can see Morrison as the spearhead with Tudgay and Mellor supporting. Pleased for Tudgay, he took a lot of stick last season, some of it was justified, but I don't agree with the people who want him sold, I think he can still be a quality player for us.

i think tudgay as a deep lying creative forward, mellor as a target man and morrison as the greedy finisher. and hugn hefferner as backup

Its like waiting for a bus - no decent strikers for years and now we have loads. Am I right in thinking Morrision wasn't even involved last night? Last year we were relying on Clarke?!?, Varney?!? and Tudders, who isn't an out and out striker anyway, as ozzie says above. We can even afford the odd injury. This squad is easily good enough for the championship. Any doubt I had when AI was appointed are now distant memories. How has he managed to get all these players with no money. I have said for the past couple of seasons loan players cause all sorts of problems. We now only have one (i think) and he's on a season long looking to prove himself. This must be the turning point for us. Imagine AI with money. Also shows just how bad a manager Laws was. When we went down it was difficult to see how we were going to bounce straight back - now its difficult to see us not win automatic promotion. Well happy!

Yes they are good signings and it is a decent Championship squad. But lets not get carried away just yet. Lets see where we are at xmas then judge the signings and the man in charge. Overall though- very happy bunny! :D

not been this excited in a long time i know its early days but i just cant see us staying in that division with the players we have got, i just can not believe he has got such good signings with no money!!!!!!! lets just hope we stay fit and focused all season everyone will be coming to s6 and treating it like a cup game.

agree with 'doitforlove' re: tudgay. He had a brilliant season initially, scoring a blinder against the Blades and committing his future to us in the process. Yes, his last season was torrid but all this rubbish about him not caring and not wanting to play for us angers me if I'm honest. I think half the problem for Marcus last season was the rubbish he was surrounded by. I'm confident we've got a superior squad now, despite the drop and I think he may well flourish if he's used properly. UTO!!

I'd echo much of what has been written. It is difficult not to get carried away after a summer of signings such as we haven't seen in quite a while but I will add a little note of caution. So many new faces often take time to gel into a team, look how badly Forest started in the Championship last year and compare that with their season in full, so lets be patient and not expect instant success. That being said I have to say that at last we have a team/squad that looks capable of mounting a real title challenge. C'mon the Owls!
