Dudek Key To Owls Carson Deal

Liverpool's Polish stopper Jerzy Dudek holds the key to whether Owls boss Paul Sturrock can secure a deal to bring Anfield and England goalkeeper Scott Carson to Hillsborough next season.

The Owls have been closely linked with a season-long loan move for the former Leeds United stopper after his successful loan spell with the club at the end of last season - which saw the Owls secure their Championship status.

But Carson could soon shoot up to second choice 'keeper at Anfield behind current number one Jose Reina, should Jerzy Dudek and Chris Kirkland both be sold this summer. Should such a scenario unfold, the Owls interest in Carson would surely be ended.

Owls boss Paul Sturrock hoped to secure a deal for Carson sooner rather than later as he aims to get his squad together for the start of pre-season. But Carson's involvement in the World Cup has put the move on hold.

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez also seems in no rush to complete the deal, as he waits to decide on the future of Dudek and Kirkland.

Kirkland has been strongly linked with a summer move to Wigan Athletic after his loan spell with West Bromich Albion ended. Second choice stopper Dudek has also been linked with a move away from the club to Portsmouth.

With David Lucas rejecting his latest contract offer to stay at Hillsborough, the Owls have just one goalkeeper at the club in Chris Adamson. Sturrock will be keeping his eyes on the progress of Dudek and Kirkland in a hope to bring Carson to Hillsborough.

Should Carson become available, the Owls will face strong competition from Championship rivals Cardiff City for his signature.

Let's watch the situation: there were times last season that I thought Dudek would be definitely outta there, but he's hanging on. Who knows, they might keep Kirkland as #2.

I think both will leave, but I also think Bentiz will want Carson to get some experience and will sign another back-up for Reina.
