Owls Fall To Grimsby Defeat

Wednesday suffered their first defeat of the pre-season to date as Blue Square Premier side Grimsby Town edged the Owls at Blundell Park on Saturday.

Alan Connell and Peter Bore bagged the goals for the Mariners, while a Luke Boden strike proved just a consolation for Alan Irvine's new-look side.

Wednesday were understrength for the clash - Irvine no doubt leaving some players available for next week's friendly clash at Darlington - but Wednesdayites still got to see their fair share of new arrivals.

Jon Otsemobor, Chris Sedgwick and Paul Heffernan all started for the Owls, while Gary Teale, Neil Mellor and trialist Adriano Moke come on as substitutes.

Things didn't start to plan for Wednesday as Connell bagged the opener early on.

Lee Peacock was sporting the captain's armband for the hosts and he got a good reception from the 1,500 travelling Wednesdayites in the away end.

The game was all about getting fitness levels up before the start of the season and Wednesday certainly got a good workout in that respect.

Luke Boden levelled matters right on the stroke of half-time before Irvine started to ring the changes in the second half.

But it was the Mariners who got the last say when Bore netted a late winner to give the Blue Square Premier side a confidence-boosting win.

Despite the defeat, Irvine will have no doubt have been happy at the workout his side received as his side go into their next friendly clash at Darlington next week.

Of course it's all about the results in pre-season isn't it!

Maybe this will help to keep feet on the ground. No-one will give us this league. Good players need to play together to be a good team. I think we can win League 1 but we need to do more than just turn up and hopefully this will be a lesson.
