Owls' Rivals Target Varney Swoop

Wednesdayites could yet see former loan striker Luke Varney back at Hillsborough at least once next season - playing for League One rivals Southampton.

Saints boss Alan Pardew is reported to be interesting in signing the out-of-favour Derby County hitman, who spent the majority of last season on loan at Hillsborough.

Pardew is undestood to be keen to bolster his striking options ahead of the new npower League One campaign and the former Crewe man is thought to be on his list of targets.

Varney is deemed surplus to requirements at Pride Park under boss Nigel Clough but has featured for the Rams this pre-season.

It's unknown whether Owls boss Alan Irvine decided against bringing Varney back to S6 for next season or whether Wednesday were priced out of his services.

The Leicester-born forward enjoyed three loan spells in the blue and white stripe, netting eleven goals in 35 starts.
