Wednesday continued their poor pre-season form with a 2-0 friendly defeat at South Yorkshire rivals Barnsley on Tuesday night.
Goals from Martin Devaney and Goran Lovre gave the Tykes the victory - and bragging rights - at Oakwell in a game which the hosts won comfortably.
One of the few positives for Owls boss Alan Irvine was the inclusion of summer recruit Giles Coke in the squad, and he made a 20-minute appearance in the second-half.
Other than that, the travelling Wednesdayites will have left Barnsley with little enthusiasm for the start of the campaign following another lacklustre performance from those in blue and white.
The hosts could well have been 3-0 in the early exchanges but they only had a Devaney goal to show for their early domination.
Young Owls stopper Arron Jameson was certainly in the thick of the action and although conceding early on, made some smart saves to deny Mark Robins' men improving their lead before half-time.
The performances of Daniel Jones and youngster Liam Palmer were the only showings worth mentioning - but that was compared to the rest of the Wednesday squad who hardly covered themselves in glory.
It took the Reds a while to confirm their superiority and Lovre, a new recruit for the Tykes this summer, made it 2-0 and completed the scoring with 20 minutes to go.
It's certainly been a tough week for the Owls - before the season has even started - but Irvine has one last chance to get things right before the big kick-off, with a trip to another Championship side in Doncaster Rovers on Saturday.
