Barnsley Ease By Wednesday

Barnsley Ease By Wednesday

Wednesday continued their poor pre-season form with a 2-0 friendly defeat at South Yorkshire rivals Barnsley on Tuesday night.

Goals from Martin Devaney and Goran Lovre gave the Tykes the victory - and bragging rights - at Oakwell in a game which the hosts won comfortably.

One of the few positives for Owls boss Alan Irvine was the inclusion of summer recruit Giles Coke in the squad, and he made a 20-minute appearance in the second-half.

Other than that, the travelling Wednesdayites will have left Barnsley with little enthusiasm for the start of the campaign following another lacklustre performance from those in blue and white.

The hosts could well have been 3-0 in the early exchanges but they only had a Devaney goal to show for their early domination.

Young Owls stopper Arron Jameson was certainly in the thick of the action and although conceding early on, made some smart saves to deny Mark Robins' men improving their lead before half-time.

The performances of Daniel Jones and youngster Liam Palmer were the only showings worth mentioning - but that was compared to the rest of the Wednesday squad who hardly covered themselves in glory.

It took the Reds a while to confirm their superiority and Lovre, a new recruit for the Tykes this summer, made it 2-0 and completed the scoring with 20 minutes to go.

It's certainly been a tough week for the Owls - before the season has even started - but Irvine has one last chance to get things right before the big kick-off, with a trip to another Championship side in Doncaster Rovers on Saturday.

Barnsley: Steele, Hassell, Shackell, Foster, McEveley (L Potter 46), Hammill (Adam 85), Doyle, Butterfield, Devaney (Boulding 85), Lovre (Bennett 76), Gray. Unused subs: Preece, Dickinson, Colace, Branson.

Wednesday: Jameson, Otsemobor, HInds, Purse, Jones (Spurr 76), Sedgwick (Teale 71), O'Connor (Potter 71), Palmer (Coke 71), Boden (Miller 71), Tudgay (Johnson 71), Mellor (Heffernan 71). Unused subs: O'Donnell.

The optimism I had less than a week ago is slowly but surely disapearing. I think it's time to lock myself in a box until the 7th Aug so I can't read any more bad press on Wednesday.... Winding up orders, selling players for peanuts, poor friendly results..... Dare I ask, what next? Lets hope AI doesn't decide to jump ship through lack of trust in the board... UTO WTID (p.s sack the board)

Agree with you Owlsmad, my optimism for the new season has been replaced by increasing doubt that we have a squad that will under perform. This team should be capable of scoring goals. Less sure about keeping clean sheets, but they should score. I don't think the Board can be sacked. I think they need to agree to sell their shares or have them taken way by administration

I agree completely. I like every Wednesday fan feel a bit hisheartened now, you wunt be an Owl if not. We lost a bloody good keeper this week for peanuts (FACT) and have had some bad pre season friendlies (FACT). But its not the end of the world. The player we have signed are top players more that good enough for league one its a big facelift of the team 8 players are gonna take a while to settle in and whats more with Irvine playing with the team to sort out what works and what dosnt we aint gonna be able to expect consistancy. As for Keeper situation its not like O' Donnell has done a terrible job in goal pre season hes not let that many in although I do agree we need a more senior number one if poss. My only worry and maybe im contradicting myself a bit is why are we failing to score when we have strikers who were hitting one every 3 last season and also wheres Clinton Morrison ? Irvine said he was 2 games behind rest of team when we signed him 2 weeks ago and thas why he wouldnt be playing yet 2 weeks on and he still dont make bench. Hes not injured and they covering it up are they ?? Hope to god the wednesday striker curse hasnt struck again. Chins up folks !! UP THE OWLS

Fact is we have played better opposition apparently the last two games so come 7th Aug we should be ready against those who are lesser than us. Lets try keep the faith we have a decent squad and a very good manager. Just a backwards board.

Is it just me though jamesc1905 but I cant see whats wrong with O' Donnell and Jameson. As you say we played higer opposotion and its not like they let a bag full in 1 goal most games. Come on what do we expect ??? In league 1 with a lower level of teams respectively it could be their seasons to shine and make a break !! Give them a chance Owls fans.

i think ROD should be our number 1, hes good enough and will only get better. main concern is if we sell JJ we are in trouble because we have NO creativity, obly palmer looks to try and play dangerous balls, o'connor cant, miller is to simple, potter is useless. palmer and coke central midfield for me next year. heffernan and morrison to start up top as mellor hasnt looked sharp enough for me so far

It just sickens me when we lose to the likes of the dingles. But come on, Irvines playin with our new team to try to get it right prior to the new season. Irvine has done a great job bringing in some good players over the summer and I hope when it it comes to the real deal, they gel and perform. (AND WIN THE LEAGUE, COMMON WEDNESDAY!
