'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Let The Keeper Search Commence

So it's day one without Lee Grant on the books at Wednesday and Owls boss Alan Irvine has started his search for a new Hillsborough number one.

Irvine has just over a week to find a suitable replacement for Grant, who departed to Burnley for a fee believed to be around the £1 million mark yesterday.

Wednesday kick-off their npower League One campaign on Saturday, August 7.

It's not ideal timing, if at all, for Irvine to lose his goalkeeper, but he's confident of finding a new man between the sticks in time for the season opener.

Irvine has told the Sheffield Star: 'I'll be very surprised if we don't have a goalkeeper by the time Dagenham and Redbridge comes around. We have choices. There are keepers out there.'

Wednesdayite Nicky Weaver and former Owls loan star Iain Turner, currently at Premier League Everton, are the only names to have been linked with the number one jersey at S6.

But expect the rumours to hot up as the season draws closer, and keep your eyes on Vital Wednesday for all the latest news.

I agree Iain Turner would be a fantastic replacement, and dare I say it, potentially better than Grant with all things considered (and I was a massive Grant fan). But is he really affordable for us is all seriousness??

*in all seriousness??

I'm guessing a season-long loan would be the best idea if we're after Turner?

Ghana's Richard Kingson has been released by Wigan?? Had a great World Cup?? Would be no problem with work permits and has spent 3 season already in England?

i would be in favour of turner, have no objections with weaver though. Thought turner was fantastic the last time he was at hillsborough, it would be an improvement over grant by quite a distance, as much as i like granty.

i would be amazed if Everton let Turner go after releasing Nash and selling Ruddy. As fare as i know, Howard and Turner are their only keepers...

Everton have just signed Yan Mucha the Slovakian international, but Iain Turner has played in all pre-season friendlies up to now, but that could be because Tim Howard and Yan Mucha are having a break after playing in the world cup.

I doubt Everton will let Turner go. They've just released Carlo Nash (who went to Stoke) and John Ruddy has signed for Norwich.

I called Richard Kingson about a week ago, think he would be great, but may be a little out of our reach. Think realistically we're gonna end up with weaver, which I'm happy wit, but if we'd stayed in championship wouldn't have been a great swap so i only see weaver as a stop gap/2nd keeper for next year.

noticed sky sports have just reported that david james has agreed to join on a 4 year deal...thats a long contract for a very old keeper
