Weaver On Irvine's Keeper List

Weaver On Irvine's Keeper List

Wednesday boss Alan Irvine has confirmed that Nicky Weaver is on his list of potential replacements for goalkeeper Lee Grant.

Die-hard Wednesdayite and former Manchester City man Weaver has been the name on everybody's lips following the news that Lee Grant was to move to Burnley.

Weaver is a free agent and is thought to be keen a move to the team he supported as a boy, and where he enjoyed a loan spell five years ago.

But Irvine hasn't yet started discussions with any players over the vacant number one jersey at Hillsborough.

He told the Sheffield Star: 'We need a goalkeeper who will not cost us any money in loan fees. Nicky Weaver is on my list but we have not spoken to any player at this stage or agreed terms.'

Weaver spent six months at Burnley as back-up to Brian Jensen in the Premier League last season.

He's thougth to be the front-runner to pull on the Owls' number one jersey for the season opener a week on Saturday.

what does my head in is the fact that ALL the transfer money from Grants sale is goin towards the debt. why isnt the £550,000 paid off then the rest given to Irvine

If you thinkm back WorksopsNumber1 didnt the board make a statement even before any thought of the sale of Grant saying they had the money for the tax bill and were all ready to pay it. That be the case then as you rightly say the Grant sale fee should therefore be free for AI to spend on new players. If it isnt and then as usual the board lied blatently about having the money to pay the bill. Once again shocking !!

what about the 8 players brought it by the club? the agents fees, and big championship wages spent on morrison, fat man and sedgewick?....come on you have just been relegated, lossed approx 3m in tv revenue, then given another 3m to cover that short fall from the coop wendy bank and been allowed to strengthen aswell as keeping hold of your best players...now you are moaning that you can't have any of the grant money to spend....get a grip and get realistic. we have a third of your debt and we cutting back on all fronts + our turnover is practically double whats wednesdays is!! so on the grand scheme of things to have been extremely ambitious!! now bloddy shut up and wait for the season to start....you are 4th favourites so stand every chance thanks to the support of your board when your debt is crippling you.

The truth is bladesforlife is its the way football is going right now, lets face it who is ever going to push money into Sheff Wed or Sheff U, basically cos we aint from London. Any big investments come in they only ever interested in the big clubs or the ones in the capital. I said it for a long time ago that in the next 3 years some clubs will fold and by that I mean some bigger clubs. Stats already stated a year ago that spending on transfers had been cut majorly over the past 3 years even by such as Man U. Also because of the financial issues in this country banks, government ect arnt as eager to bail football clubs out when they in trouble like they used to. I think one thing we will both have in common is the issue with Forgemasters not gettin the financial support in Sheff and many will lose jobs. Now surely its not fair to bail a football club out but not help Forgemasters. What Im saying is money to bail out aint gonna be there anymore and I think many clubs will just dissapear.
