Premier League Club Bid For Tudgay

Wednesday boss Alan Irvine has revealed that a Premier League club, thought to be Blackpool, have had a bid turned down for Owls striker Marcus Tudgay.

The Owls boss has confirmed that the bid fell 'well short' of the club's valuation for Tudgay, who has been linked with moves away from Hillsborough following the club's relegation from the Championship last season.

Vital understands that Premier League newcomers Blackpool are the club to have made the bid for the former Derby County man.

But it looks like the Seasiders will have to dramatically up their bid if they want to get their man, with Irvine insisting that the Owls are not a 'selling club'.

'Yeah, there was one phone call, one club showing an interest in Marcus but they were well short of anything that would tempt us to do anything with Marcus,' Irvine told the official SWFC website.

'I think everybody looked at the Lee Grant situation and thought Sheffield Wednesday are a selling club now, we're not. We're not going to do anything like that lightly. We're not in a position where we have to sell now so it'll take very, very good offers to get our best players.'

He continued: 'It was a Premier League club who made the enquiry but they didn't make a Premier League club's offer so it's the end of that as far as I'm concerned.'

Vital understands that Ian Holloway's men may also have made an enquiry as to the availability of Wednesday winger Jermaine Johnson, but neither club have confirmed any interest from the Bloomfield Road club for the Jamaican.

Sounds like Blackpool have offered absolute peanuts for Tudgay though.

He payed absolute peanuts last season after Burnley planted the seed in his head so I wouldnt be surprised if this did the same? If he starts against D&R he might just be thinking "I could be starting against Wigan this time next week in the Premier League!"

I can't see how Blackpool won't get spanked left, right and centre this season.

Blackpool will be awful this year but I am sure will give it a go. They will go down won't ever go up again so going there would be a silly move.

Went Saturday, Tudgay was crap before he got injured and went off. Does not seem interested. Mind you, he wasnt on his own. AI says wait till the real ball comes out, on Saturdays showing, they must be saving something special because that was a performance well short of what we should expect.

I think I see a different player. He has one of the best first touches ive seen at hillsborough and if he had a good strike partner for a season like he did with Sodje for about 2 games he is at least a 20 goal striker. If Blackpool buy him they will get a bargain.

We all have our opinions and thats what makes debate healthy. I see a lad with no interest, he isnt short on ability when he decides to use it. Dont see the effort at the moment

Tudders is a good finisher and wins more than his fair share of headers although most of these are long balls pumped up to him and not decent crosses coming into the box, maybe Teale can provide some quality from wide this year for him!! With his quality I'm expecting a min of 15 goals from him this season with Mellor, Morrison and Heffernan also all getting into double figures with some midfielders also chipping in (Teale, Potter, Johnson etc) and maybe Purse, Hinds etc getting a few each from defence!!

I take your point but its the managers job to motivate his players. BL lost his own motivation in October last year. Motivation is something AI should change Skill is a very rare constant that we shouldnt let go for 500k

i'd sell him. he's got good ability but he is not a centre forward in that he doesn't take up goal scoring positions hence why he doesn't score many and when he does they are spectacular long range jobs. the problem he creates is that when he is in the team it is as a striker and because he doesn't get in the box enough all our crosses go to waste. i think he tries hard and he has got a great first touch but for me his presence stops us playing two real centre forwards

and if the deal is right they can have johnson too because for all the threat he posses he actually produces very little

I don't think tudders gets the credit he deserves. Yes he had a bad season but he turned down a prem club to stay with us, has scored some crackers and is one of our most skillful, if not the most skillful player, which is why other clubs are often linked with him. He isn't an out and out striker and last season had bad service and bad support. with the strikers we have bought and teale he may well get back to his best this season. I f i were him and a prem club came in again you wouldn't see me for dust. Even one tough season in the prem with blackpool has got to be better than sloggin it in league 1. I would be sorry to see him go but he deserves the chance, we need the money and we have got a few strikers now to cover. Now may be the time.
