Irvine Disappointed Despite Orient Win

Irvine Disappointed Despite Orient Win

Wednesday boss Alan Irvine was far from happy with his side's display, despite picking up three points against a stubborn Leyton Orient side at Hillsborough yesterday.

Lewis Buxton's second-half goal was enough to give the Owls back-to-back wins in npower League One and move them back into the play-offs in fifth.

But Irvine says there's plenty of room for improvement, insisting his troops didn't play anywhere near their full potential against the Londoners.

'We didn't play well and we know that,' Irvine told the official SWFC website.

'The dressing room was an extremely quiet place after the final whistle, but at the end of the day we've won the game.

'At the end of the season, results like that could well prove to be the difference. We all want to play free-flowing, attractive football, but unfortunately it doesn't happen every week, and you've just got win the game however you can.'

Irvine's opinion on the Owls' performance was mirrored by Wednesdayites in S6 yesterday.

But with a takeover looking likely within the next week, Owls fans have plenty of reasons to be cheerful as they head into next Saturday's clash at Yeovil in an improved vein of form both on and off the pitch.

3 points was the only good thing to come out of yesterdays game, the match was truly awful, but being a Wednesday season ticket holder i have no choice but to go to matches, but i know if i had'nt got one, yesterday is not going to make me rush out and get a ticket for the Bournemouth game, and to be honest what Howard Wilkinson said on football focus about if you buy a house you put your own furniture in it, then if i was Alan Irvine i'd be a bit worried if HIS team continue to put in negative performance like that one yesterday, and other games this season, then these new investors may be on the lookout for a new manager as well.

it says alot about this league that we are 5th and only 5 points behind the leaders when we have been so poor all season. even during our 'good start', we played badly with the exception of the hartlepool pool. for league one we have a fantastic set of strikers, but our lack of cutting edge from midfield is to be honest, possibly the worst in the league. if morrison or mellor played for rochdale they would probably be on about 10 goals already for the season. i truly hope jj is the saviour when he gets fit. maybe even a new face or two in january with our alledged new investment.

well said DEZZYP poor midfield. Why did Gary Teale take the ball from Morrison when clear on goal? then try to put a poor cross in,oh for a overlapping left or right back somebody who does'nt pass back (ZICO)happy days .

Well at least it was a win. Our midfield often dissappears. We have a wide pitch - but we don't seem to use it. I take heart from watching the League One highlights show - some of the defending of other teams is so shocking it gives me hope. Our main issue is how to make bona fide chances for the strikers. This we have singularly not done for the past 6 weeks.

isn`t this the same comment that comes out of his mouth after every game. he`s an awful awful manager punting it up to 5"8 tudgay all game. why did he make the pitch wider if hes just going to pump it long all the time, and when our two weakest players are our full backs buxton and spurr, leaving the opposition to make the most of it. when you buy a house you put your own furniture in, thank god

i must say im still surprised about our style of play, i honestly thought we would get it on the floor and play teams off the park. i have been blaming the midfield but if the defence boot it long to our forwards, who more often than not get beat in the air, then the midfield have no chance of getting in the game. if we actually played it on the floor we might look ok. when we did that under laws, remember how good potter looked for us when we initially had him on loan? and how much whelan improved for us playing that way. so much better.

I'd be disappointed as well, we were shocking but isn't it supposed to be good to play that bad and still win?? I'm sure there's been plenty of matches over the years when we've played well and lost.

yeah, sign of champions apparently, think that we are only supposed to play badly every so often though, not all the time. i did think it would still take a while to gel at the beginning of the season though. i still like to think if we can keep in contention until xmas period, it will all click into place then.....i hope.
