Sodje Leaves Trial With Owls

Wednesday have given up on signing trialist Sam Sodje after a series of niggling injuries ruled him out of featuring in reserves matches.

The former Charlton Athletic and Leeds United defender had been training with Wednesday with a view to signing as soon as the Owls' transfer embargo was lifted.

But after failing to be fit enough to feature in two reserve games for boss Alan Irvine to cast an eye over him, it has been mutually agreed that Sodje will leave the club.

Irvine told the Sheffield Star: 'Sam missed a couple of training sessions with injuries, and that made it very difficult; he was scheduled to play against Derby, but he has had a bit of a hamstring strain so wasn't going to be able to play.

'I think he thought he needed a decision a bit quicker, on what was going to happen, and I couldn't give him any decision without seeing him play in games. He's the type of player who is much easier to assess in games rather than in training.'

Sodje is keen to find a new club after being released by Charlton over the summer.

I hope this isnt some kind of PR spin. translated- no investment, no transfer embargo lifted, no hope. This whole investment episode is taking far too long, anybody else get the impression that the investment is going down the toilet?

Ya, looks doomed - I don't believe at this stage anything is going to happen. Does anyone know; if England does get WC2018, who pays for the stadium redevelopment? Does the FA pay X% or is it all SWFC?

If he's having a few injuries and hasn't been able to play in any reserve matches, I think we're better off without him. Last think we need are more injury-prone players!

owl1, im pretty certain all stadium redevelopments are government funded. If we get the world cup its another plus for investers to look at. Cant see bidding to get our stadium involved if it means we have to spend a few million doing it up

Maybe the WC2018 decision is holding up the investment (not due till 2nd Dec though) i.e. is Hillsborough going to be part of the World cup (biggest sporting event in the world)

Yup, I think this investment fiasco is circling the drain. The disappointment, I'm used to... It's not like we haven't been around this block before. I'm just saddened that Wilkinson has gotten his good name caught up in all this. He's a genuine bloke with the club's best intentions at heart. Sad business all around.

Whether or not this is due to the investment/non-investment, I'm not too bothered by this. I thought from the start that we had enough cover within the club without spending more money on another defender. The fact that he's not willing to wait around a little longer, especially as his injuries are part of the problem, shows that he's not the man for this club. We need fighters, battlers and people with plenty of spirit, not someone who's gonna spit the dummy out if everything doesn't go his way. As far as I'm concerned this has nothing to do with the investment and everything to do with an impatient player who hasn't exactly been inundated with offers!

I agree with all the comments above about the delay in getting any funds in, but I can't see that the signing of Sodje would be halted due to the transfer embargo. He has no club and so it is not a transfer. Not sure if that's correct, but it seems to make sense. The bigger concern is that if the bank are running the club, which does seem to be the case, then they may well have stood in the way of any additions to the wage bill!

dobby1,a transfer embargo covers signing, loan signing and free transfers, nobody in at all. To be fair it sounds like AI has just fired him off because he cant have a look at him. i actually agree with casowl in regards to bringing somebody else in, quite happy with our defence options, just have a couple of suspentions at the moment, no need to draft somebody else in. Just be nice to have a little update on the investment every now and then.

Optimistic again I notice, great support from you lot isn't it? Point one Sam Sodje never sounded attractive to me as well if he's struggling with injuries we don't need one of them so at least we didn't commit him to a stupid contract, well done Alan. Point two I can't see two big Wednesday fans such as Wilko and Turner would lead us a merry dance unless there were something in it. Point three the team have been rubbish but still winning so imagine what we will be like when we get our act together? Point four the only teams in history who have gone bust have never had a very big fanbase, even Wimbledon who dined out in Selhurst Park for years despite being a rubbish ground. Point five if we can't afford to host the World Cup we won't be selected simple not a big loss if it means not running up ludacris debts to host 2 games at the World Cup!

I think 4 years of crap has more to do with it 10goalpayne more than anything it's one thing after another, I agree with not signing Sam sodje but like everything else that's gone on for the last few years things don't add up or someones not being honest enough is enough but if you want to hang on to every word that's pumped out of that shambles of a boardroom then more fool you!

Well if I was looking to invest my money it wouldn't be in Sheffield Wednesday how long would it take to get a return from paying off 26million debt? Football isn't just football it's a business and that's ruined the game for everyone

I agree, i dont know why anyone would take on our debt? If the club went into admin., the debt would be largely written off, and then someone could come in and save the club (i.e. buy whats left) without the debt. At this stage its only a distraction, Nov17th will tell all, I cant see the bank bailing us out again.

10goalpayne, wilko and turner arent the money men, wilko is the chairman, turner is nothing more than the go between, they can be optimistic as they want, its not down to them. It doesnt matter how big the fan base is, if you spend above your means, your buggered, look at chelsea, they would be no better than leeds if abramovich hadnt showed up. If we couldnt afford to host the world cup, we wouldnt have thrown our hat in, our ground will be upgraded courtesy of the government, hosting games can only make us money. if teams lost money, nobody would want it.
