Southport Boss Eyes Histon Repeat

Southport boss Liam Watson is looking to take inspiration from Histon's FA Cup giant-killing against Leeds United when his men face Wednesday in the first round on Sunday.

The Owls travel to Haig Avenue as the favourites against their Blue Square Premier opponents but knowing full well that the watching national will be keen to witness an FA Cup giant-killing.

Any victory for Watson's men would mirror the giant-killing dished out by Histon on Leeds United in the same competition two years ago - something which sparked the departure of Gary McAllister as White boss at the time.

Histon, who also played in the Blue Square Premier at the time, saw off the Elland Road club 1-0 in November 2008 at a time when Leeds were struggling in a similar manner in League One.

Watson told the Southport Visitor: 'I look back at the cup match the year before last when Histon beat Leeds United in the pelting rain and would say we`ll set up in a similar fashion on Sunday.'

Watson is banking on the strong rain and winds to continue over the weekend to make Haig Avenue as unwelcoming as possible for the Owls.

And Port are looking to give Marcus Tudgay an extra-special welcome after picking him out as the key man.

"If Tudgay plays then I`ll make sure he isn`t allowed to get in the holes and we make it tough for him,' Watson continued.

Saturday's game is live on ITV 1, kick-off 12 noon.
