Owls Fans Mixed On Southport Hopes

A few weeks ago Owls fans wouldn't have been too concerned about a trip to Southport in the FA Cup first round, but oh how things can change...

Alan Irvine takes his troops to Haig Avenue on Sunday with the ITV cameras hoping for a FA Cup giant-killing from the Blue Square Premier side.

And, although Wednesday will still be favourites going into the clash, Wednesdayites aren't as optimistic about their hopes as they would have been a few weeks ago - a sign of how troubled the Hillsborough club is at present.

The latest Vital Wednesday poll asked supporters how they thought this weekend's clash would pan out at the seaside - and the responses were mixed.

The majority still believe the Owls will progress to the second round on Sunday, with 19 per cent thinking Wednesday will win convincingly and 42 per cent believing that we'll scrape a victory.

But 32 per cent of Vital Wednesday users think that Wednesday could be on the wrong end of a giant killing come 1.45pm on Sunday.

Just four per cent think a draw will be the outcome, meaning a replay at Hillsborough will be required.

The downbeat nature of Owls fans comes on the back of consecutive defeats in npower League One which leave the Owls tenth in the league table - a way short of the pre-season target of promotion back to the Championship.

we win, maybe a cup run. a loss, hopefully a new manager. a draw, the inevitable result then.
